I know that family tradition has maintained that Brice COLLINS of Cumberland and Mifflin Counties, Pennsylvania, and Belmont County, Ohio, had a wife named Ann, and her surname is given as DEVILLIER.
However, the wife named in Brice’s will probated in 1818 in Belmont County, not very long after the family’s relocation to that area, was Martha. Therefore, researchers have tried to reconcile this discrepancy by combining the two given names.
However, Martha is not a common given name in the French language, at least as far as I am aware. There is a daughter named Ann mentioned in the will from whom a large number of members of the LDS Church claim descent. And I am also aware of the Nauvoo Temple records naming her.
I would simply like to know if anyone has an actual source, specifically a document, which supports this COLLINS/DEVILLIER marriage. I believe there was a French military officer by that name in the Colonies during the Revolutionary era. Does anyone know anything about him or his family?
I have been researching this family for several decades now and would be very appreciative of any documentation that would resolve this question once and for all in my mind. (I am descended from Brice’s daughter Catharine. Her son William, also named in the will, is my 2ggfather.)
Thank you to anyone who can help!

The source for the Devillier surname is the 23 January 1787
Chassey-Beaupré, Meuse, Lorraine, France marriage of Nicolas Collin to Madeleine Bourotte where the parents of Nicolas Collin are named Brice Collin and Anne De Villier. That Nicolas Colln married in 1787 shows clearly he is too old to be a son of Brice Collins of Pennsylvania and Ohio. Nicolas Collin is not the son of Brice Collins of Pennsylvania and Ohio and neither is his mother Anne De Villier the wife of Brice Collins of Pennsylvania and Ohio.
!From will of Brice COLLINS, signed 12 D
!From will of Brice COLLINS, signed 12 Dec 1817, probated 21 Mar 1818, Belmont County, Ohio. !NOTE: Ancestral File has Brice's wife's name as Ann. ??? It does seem rather odd that none of his children were named Martha, although Catherine names her daughter Martha. Is it possible that Brice married twice?
