Middlesex was established in 1643. Sudbury was Marlborough’s “mother town”. The General Court was petitioned in 1656 to make a town “eight miles distant” from Sudbury. The petition was granted and the Marlborough Plantation was formed. Marlborough was fromed as a town in 1660. After laying out their homesteads and holding a meeting to form necessary laws, the people of Marlborough built a place of general worship. Cotton Mather, the spiritual advisor declared that the place must be called a “Meeting House.” In March 1676, the “Meeting House” was attacked by Indians and burned to the ground.
The first paper money in America was issued by the colony of Massachusetts (February 3, 1690). The currency was first used to pay soldiers fighting a war against Quebec, Canada. (See the Shay's Rebellion after .) Edmund Halley first observed the comet that was to be named Halley's Comet in 1705.
