23. HARRIS5 WEAVER, (William,4 (7) Clement,3 Clement,2 Clement1) sometimes called Harrison
Weaver, was born Nov. 3, 1712, in East Greenwich, probably on his father's farm in Frenchtown. The
date of his death is unknown, but he was living in Exeter at the time of the 1774 enumeration.
He married in East Greenwich Dec. 7, 1735, Sarah Rouse, born probably in 1712. She was a
niece-in-law of his uncle, Clement Weaver, being the daughter of Sarah (Long) Langford and her
second husband, Immanuel Rouse, and a granddaughter of Philip and Hannah Long. She probably
died after 1774, but certainly after March 14, 1763, when she and her husband sold land. He was a
cooper and yeoman by occupation. He was made a freeman of the colony in March 1742-3 and of
West Greenwich May 6, 1746. In May, 1744 he was chosen Ensign of the Second East Greenwich
Military Company or train band. He removed to West Greenwich in 1746. May 27, 1746, he and
others were summoned to appear before "the Quarter Meeting in order to be excepted in to ye Jure
Box."
June 2, 1759, license was granted him to sell liquor at his house for one month, he to pay a fee of œ1
and July 7, 1759, his license was extended for a year for œ12.
Oct. 6, 1759, it was voted to hold the next Council meeting on the first Saturday in November at the
house of Harris Weaver, innholder, at 12 o'clock. In July, 1760, he was denied a license.
By his deed of July 18, 1718, his eldest brother, William Weaver, provided that he should have, after
their mother's death, ten acres of the paternal estate. This land was quitclaimed to him Sept. 13, 1744,
by his mother, Elizabeth Weaver, of East Greenwich, widow, who calls him her "son Harrison
Weaver," and is described as the land on which he lives, and bounded as follows: southerly "on land
belonging to my son Benjamin Weaver, westerly on a highway, northerly on land of my son Thomas
Weaver, easterly on land of my son William Weaver."
Feb. 27, 1745-6 Harris Weaver of East Greenwich, yeoman, sold to Joseph Spencer of West
Greenwich for œ450, the above mentioned ten acres of land, describing it as "in East Greenwich in
that part commonly called the French Towne." Between Feb. 27, 1745-6 and March 14, 1763, he
bought and sold several farms in West Greenwich. The court records show that he lived in West
Page 95
Greenwich as late as Dec. 21, 1769. Some time in 1770 he removed to Exeter where the court
records show that he lived in January, 1771 and Oct. 25, 1773.
In the Rhode Island census of 1774 Harrison Weaver of Exeter had a family consisting of two males
over and one under sixteen and two females over sixteen.
