Notes - Ellinor's father the the Reverend Willia
Ellinor's father the the Reverend William Thompson, first minister atBraintree. His gravestone is the oldest standing in Hancock Cemetarydating to 1666. The Rev. Thompson suffered greatly from what was calledat the time "The devil's bath", what we refer to today as severedepression. After the death of his first wife whilst he was enroute fromVirginia, his depression worsened. He would take to breaking down incrying fits during his sermons, his children were scattered to thevarious neighbors to care for. Prior to his leaving England, his ownmother was locked away for murdering her husband with an axe.
After the death of her husband, William, Ellinor Vesy contracted intomarriage with John French, who at that time was a widower with sixchildren of his own. In the contract it clearly stated that French wouldhave no control, or rights, to William Vesey's estate, that French wouldpay Ellinor an allowance per annum that she may spend as she pleased, andthat French would spend the length of Ellinor's mourning period living inthe barn.
