John was said to be the strongest man in John was said to be the strongest man in New England in his day. Tradition says he was visited in East Windsor by a celebrated athelete, who had come all the way from Virginia to test their relative strength. Osborn was disinclined to the trial, but, finding the Virginian persistent, finally accepted and adroitly remarking that a drink of cider would be refreshing before engaging in such a contest, led the way to a cider-press on his farm. Raising one of the filled barrels to his lips with astounding ease, he wished good health to his visitor, took a good long draught from its' bung, and politely handed it to the Virginian. The latter, amazed, replied that he would never drink with the devil, for no man could, of his own unaided strength, do what Osborn had done, and returned home without the combat he had so greatly desired.
