John Smith appears to have lived alternately and had businesses in both Wethersfield and Hadl ey. He and his brother Philip bought their father's Wethersfieldhome in 1668, probably becau se one or both of them had a business in Wethersfield. Judd's "Hadley", pp. 93-4, says tha t as early as 1667 Samuel Porter and John Smith had a boat on the Connecticut River and carri ed grain downstream. Heowned a bolting mill in Hadley and in 1672 a tanning shop in Wethersf ield. Heand his brother Philip were authorized "wolf killers" in Hadley, and were paid40 sh . a head bounty. John Smith was in King Philip's War and in the "Falls Fight" on 1 May 1676, when the Indian s were badly beaten. They rallied, however, and attacked Hatfield on 30 May, at which time J ohn was killed. Cotton Mather, writing of the Battle said: "...yet the English lost not on e man, till within about an hundred rods of the town, when five of ours were slain; among who mwas a precious young man whose name was Smith, that place having lost many in losing that on e man." Soon afterward, in a campaign in which Connecticut militia joined, King Philip's Wa r was brought to an end.

Several persons had what was called a bolting mill, as John Smith, William Partrigg (Partridge), Philip Smith, Richard Montague, Mr John Russell Jr and Timothy Nash.
