      Abraham (Jeremiah) Vail was in his seve
      Abraham (Jeremiah) Vail was in his seventh year when his parents both died. Until he was eighteen he lived with his maternal grandfather, Joshua Youngs. He then learned the coopers trade and afer he was of age made on trip as a sailor to the West iNDIES. hE WAS EIGHTEEN YEARS OLD, OF LIGHT COMPLEXION, FIVE FEET FIVE INCHES TALL, AND A LABORER WHEN HE ENLISTED, aPR 24, 1760 IN THE COMPANY COMMANED BY cAPT. iSRAEL hORTON FOR THE LAST YEAR'S CAMPAIGN IN THE fENCH AND iNDIAN wAR. hIS ELDER BROTHER tHOMAS WAS A LIEUTENANT IN THE SAME COMPANY. hE WAS TWNTY SIX WHEN HE MARRIED eLIZABETH, THE DAUGHTER OF rEV. jOSEPH lEE, THE THIRD SETTLED MINISTER AT oYSTER pONDS. The Rev. Joseph Lee was a "meek, quiet, good, but infirm man" who was born in 1726, married Mary Allen and preached at Oyster Ponds until the outbreak of the Revolution and the seizure of Long Island by the British. He then removed to Lyme, Ct., with his family. There he lived on a farm until his death in August 1799.
