Thomas Vail inherited and occupied the Point Farm which his father bought from Giles Sylvester Mar 10, 1687. He appears on the roll of the Third Company, Southold Militia, in 1715, as a private under Capt. William Booth. There is a deed on record in which Thomas Vail, blacksmith, on May 22, 1733, sold Joseph Pain one half of the three lots of Land lying near the Great Pond. He probably learned the trade follwed by his father and grandfather. The only child known was his son Stephen.
