Tuttle was born in Hamden, New Haven, Connecticut in 1795. According to his fatherus military pension records the family moved from Hamden to Pennsylvania in 1804. They stayed there for about four or five years then moved on to New York, where they lived for about eight years. That would mean that they arrived in Clark County, Indiana around 1816 or 1817. The Bensons arrived in Clark County around the same time; in fact it is possible that they traveled from New York together. Enos S. made his first land purchase on August 10, 1819 when he purchased one hundred thirty one acres from William Ferguson for two hundred fifty dollars. A month later, on September fifth he and Rhoda were married. They remained in Clark County until the death of his father in 1843, when they moved from Clark County to Marshall County, Indiana. It appears that he was well accepted by the people of Marshall County, because from December of 1844 until September of 1847 he was elected to serve as a County Commissioner. He was then elected in 1849 to serve in the Indiana State Legislature representing Marshall and Fulton Counties. However, his political career was cut short by his death in January of 1850. Rhoda remained in Marshall County, appearing in the 1850 census as living on a farm valued at four hundred dollars with her four youngest children. In the 1860 census she is shown as living in Walnut Township of Marshall County and the farm is then valued at one thousand dollars. Our ancestor, Mary Melvina is the only child remaining with her at that time. Both Enos S. and Rhoda are buried in Salem Cemetery, which is located a little south of Inwood, Indiana.
