Will dated 3 Sep 1774 and proved 5 Feb 1782. John and his wife show up in the 1774 census living in Exeter. There are also 2 males and 2 females&gt16 and 3 girls&lt 16 in the household. John also has 9 blacks living at his house. This is more than 10% of the total number of blacks living in the whole county. The adults are probably 2 of John's children and spouses with their children. John's will describes him as a yeoman. It mentions his wife, Martha, who recd my new women's saddle and all the house hold goods that she brought to me when I married her free and clear. Two sons, John and Amos and Daughters, Sarah Morey, Lydia Hiames, wife of William, Mary Tanner, wife of Thomas, Marcy Gill and Martha Arnold, wife of Josiah. Grandsons, Benjamin Whitford, John Whitford, John MOrey and John Gill. Son John Whitford received 140 acres land in Exetor bounded in part on land of George Vaughn. Witnesses George Peirce, Samuel Sheldon and Amey Pierce. At proving, 2 of the witnesses , Georpe pierce and Amey Spink appeared. John a member of the Exeter Town Council - 15 Jun 1743. John was selected as a juror 9 Jul 1745 in the Exeter Town Council. Children Sarah, Benjamin, Lydia, Elizabeth, Mary and John belong to John Whitford and Mary Hiames( 1st wife) daughter of James Hiames and Sarah Spink.
