Notes - The 9 Jacob Ott (s) of Orangeburg, SC.
Here are the nine Jacobs, with an analysis of each to follow.
Jacob Ott, born 1703 (or 1701, or 1708) in Switzerland; came to Orangeburgh by 1749 and married Margaret Fichtner, by some stories; didn’t come at all, but his children did, according to other stories; didn’t exist at all, according to yet other accounts.
Jacob Ott, born 1725 in Oberhasli district, Switzerland; son of Melchior Ott (but which one?); married Margaret Fichtner and had at least three children; perhaps killed in the Revolutionary War; in any case, probably died by 1786 — but might also have appeared on the 1790 census.
Jacob Ott, born 1755, son of Jacob Ott and Margaret Fichtner; Revolutionary War soldier; married his cousin (or was she?), Mary Ott, and had at least two children.
Jacob Ott, born probably in the 1750s, who appears sort of out of nowhere on the 1790 census in the Caw-Caw Swamp region of Orangeburgh.
Jacob Ott, born 1774, married Margaret Jackson in 1797 and had eight children; the family moved to Washington Parish, Louisiana, where he died in 1836.
Jacob Ott, born 1776, married a woman whose name may have been Minnie and had twelve children; the family moved to Dale and Clarke Counties, Alabama, where Jacob probably died in between the 1830 and 1840 censuses.
Jacob Ott, born 1775-1784, who appears on the 1810 census for Orangeburgh with a wife and two small daughters.
Jacob Ott, born 1775-1784, who appears on the 1810 census for Orangeburgh with a wife and six children under sixteen.
Jacob Ott, born 1797, called “Jake”, son of Jacob Ott born 1776; served in the War of 1812; married Mary Hinkle in 1823 and moved to Dale County, Alabama.
