!May have been married twice. If so, the other wife may have been Nancy. If so, Hannah outlived her husband and was executrix of his estate. This John immigrated from New Jersey to North Carolina probably in 1746-1747 - not over the mountains, but farther south and west than any of his ancestors. Since he did not inherit from his father, who died in 1744, it was reasonable for him to move west. As a result, our line of the Carmans missed the political buildup to the Revolution. Daniel Carman has found a wonderful story about a decision that only landowners could vote for the state assembly in 1776 (Citation below). In this article are mentioned as landowners: John Carman Sr., John Carman, Jr., Caleb Carman, Thomas Kimborough Sr., Thomas Kimborough Jr., William Moore, and Thomas Dixon. All of these folks appear elsewhere in these records. SOURCES: Will of John Carman, Caswell Co., Book A, 1782, p. 197 (The division of John's estate also left property to a Robert and a Jesse Kimbrough); North Carolina Genealogical Society Journal, 10 (1984), p. 98.
John and wife Nancy is his son John. John was only married once by all accounts to date. The family did not move directly to North Carolina either. They were in Maryland between circa 1754 & 1777. Two of his children marry in Maryland; both named in the estate files in NC in 1782. At least one of the in-laws was of Quaker stock as well which could both account for their absence in records; and also for their moving to North Carolina as several of them participated in the American Revolution. Slowly but surely... and I have been digging into this line now for 48 years.
