      life sketch
      First generation to come to America from Germany. According to the Loucks Genealogy book published in 1940, he was from Illstein, Germany (can't find on map?). Johann married Maria Catharina and sailed from Rotterdam, Holland on 7/15/1709, as seen on the New York Subsistence List, page 287. There were 9 Laux/Loucks families in America by 1710. Johann and Catharina settled in West Camp, New York, near the Hudson River. He was under contract by the British Government to produce ships stores, but it was unprofitable, so they were kept in camps and supported by government grants. They eventually moved to Schenectady, Schoharie, then settled in Stone Arabia along the Mohawk Valley. They settled on a tract of land consisting of 12,700 acres with other settlers.

      Johan Dietrich would never have thought while coming to America that years later his son Johann Adam and two grandsons (Lieutenant Peter Laux and Joost Laux) would be involved as freedom fighters and soldiers in the Revolutionary War.

      Johan and all five of his sons were Patriots in the American Revolution. They were in the 2nd regiment under Colonel Jacob Klock, as were George Getman and his sons.
