! He was a "Sea-faring Man" !doc: information from Benson Family Records by Fred Benson 929273-B443bf On July 8, 1740, William Benson "sea Faring man" of Rochester and wife Elizabeth, one of the daughters of Joel Ellis of Rochester, deceased, in a quit claim deed released all their rights in their fathers estate to their mother, Mary Ellis, widow of said Joel. Rochester records give births of 2 children. No further records of them are found in Mass. nor have any been found in R. I. where theymay have lived a few years before settling in Dutchess Co. New York where othes from Mass. and R.I. had settled, among them a near relative, Jacob Benson, a son of tither Isaac or Jacob Benson of Gloucester, R.I. who settled in Dutchess Co. about 1742. The genealogy of his descendents was published by Arthur T. Benson of Dover Plains, New York in 1915. No records of the deaths of William or his wife have been found. Son, Benjamin is mentioned in a court record of Dutchess Co. in 1767 as a brother of Stutson Benson. Joel's birth was found in U.S. Pensions records. Ellis Benson, born March 31, 1740 at Rochester, Mass. He enlisted June 5, 1761 in Capt. Isaac Terbush's Co. of Provincial Troops. He gave his age as 21, which would correspond with the birth records at Rochester. Nothing further is known of him. There was an Ellis Benson living at Orwell, Vermont, who died in 1804, aged 78 (tombstone inscription), and so must have been born in 1726, and could not have been a son of William and Elizabeth Ellis Benson.

History
HISTORY: from Fred B. Benson's Book, "Benson Family" Intention of marriage was published August 12, 1738. He was married to Elizabeth Ellis by the Rev. Timothy Ruggles on March 22, 1739. (Fred B. Benson's book) pg. 21.

HISTORY: On July 8, 1740, William Benson, "seafarying man," of Rochester and his wife Elizabeth, one of the daughters of Joel Ellis of Rochester, deceased, in a quit claim deed, released all their rights in their father Joel's estate to their mother, Mary Ellis, widow of said Joel. No further records of them are found in Massachusetts, nor have any been found in Rhode Island, where they may have lived a few years before settling in Dutchess Co, NY, where others from Massachusetts and Rhode Island had settled near relative Jacob Benson, son of either Issac or Jacob.

HISTORY: CHILD #4 Joel Benson. lived in Schaphticoke, Albany Co. NY during the Rev War. His daughter Ruth married Adam Singer who came from Heidelberg in the Palestine, Germany in 1808 and settled near Cherry Valley. One of their sons, Isaac Merritt Singer, became famous as the inventor of the Singer Sewing Machine.

ORDINANCES: SP: 26 OCT 1956.

HISTORY: February 15, 1714, Freeman Ellis of Rochester, for love to son Joel Ellis of Rochester, conveyed land to him at "Mattapois which was part of Elizabeth Ellis' share at the first." Proof that the wife of William Benson was the daughter of Joel and Mary Ellis is found by a quitclaim deed to her share in her father's property to her mother, Mary Ellis, September 9, 1740 and signed by Elizabeth and William Benson.

From "Jacob Benson & His Descendants" compiled by Arthur T. Benson:
Benoni Benson, son of Joseph Benson (Pres. Ezra Taft Benson's line) built and lived on the Benson homestead on Chestnut Hill in Mendor, Worcester County, Mass. about 1721. He continued to live there for about 40 years until death in 1761. He was suceeded in the occupation of the homestead by his son, Benoni, who had previously lived at Millsville where he owned the grist mill and part of the sawmill at that place. He also kept a public house at Millville and continued to keep one at Mendon after he returned to the homestead. After the marriage of his son, John, they continued to live on the homestead until the death of the father, after which time John, or Deacon Benson, by which name he was best known, lived until his death in 1819.

Like his father Jeremiah Vail was a blacksmith. During his father's life the son's name appears in the records of deeds as "Junior". On July 2, 1670, the town of Easthampton granted him by name a considerable amount of land on condition that he would settle there and serve the townspeople as blacksmith. He was then twenty one years of age. The invitation was doubtless declined since the same town on May 11, 1671 made a similar proposal to Thomas Smith. The original home of this second Jeremiah Vail was the eastern half of the lot originally assigned to Lieutenant John Budd. This was sold to Jeremiah Vail, Junior, blacksmith, by John Budd, Jr., on the 28th of April 1679. This was before the days of speculation in town lots and the purchase was made for the establishment of a home. This must be after the date of his first marriage since single men were not then allowed to keep house. His children were probably born there and his first wife died there. On May 15, 1690, Benjamin Moore, his nearest neighbor on the east, died, and the following year the widower Jeremiah Vail married Anne, the widow of Benjamin Moor. In the settlement of Benjamin Moore's estate Jeremiah Vail and his wife Anne, "late widow and relict of deceased" were appointed administrators. Upon a bond datedJanuary 25, 1691/2, to Thomas and Nathaniel Moore, there is a later memorandum that Jeremiah Vail was son-in-law of Thomas Moore. This must be erroneous unless his first wife was Thomas Moores daughter. He was brother-in-law of Nathaniel Moore and was named one of his executors in his will.

(1) JEREMIAH VAIL, JR. + (____) & MRS. ANNE MOORE FAMILY INFORMATION,
Excerpts from "Some of the Vail Family Descended from Jeremiah
Vail at Salem, Mass., 1639," by Henry Hobart Vail and based in part
on earlier research by Alfred Vail (see Source attached to this record
for publication data):
SECOND GENERATION:
JEREMIAH (Jeremiah 1), baptized at Salem, Mass., 30 Dec 1649
Name of his first wife is unknown. He married 2d, widow Anne Moore
in 1691; d. Nov. 28, 1726, She d. 22 Dec 1726.
Like his father, Jeremiah Vail was a blacksmith. During his father's
life, the son's name appears in the records of deeds as "Junior."
The original home of this second Jeremiah Vail was the eastern half
of the lot originally assigned to Lieutenant John Budd. This was sold
to "Jeremiah Vail, Junior, blacksmith," by John Budd, Jr., on the 28th of
April, 1679. [Apparently this was in Southold, Suffolk, Long Island, NY.]
This must have been after the date of his first marriage, since single men
were not allowed to keep house. His children were probably born there,
and his first wife died there.
On May 15, 1690, Benjamin Moore, his nearest neighbor on the east,
died, and the following year the widower Jeremiah Vail married Anne,
the widow of Benjamin Moore. In the settlement of Benjamin's estate,
Jeremiah Vail and ihis wife Anne, "late widow and relict of deceased," were
appointed administrators.
In 1683, when his father's estate was valued at £74, Jeremiah Vail, Jr.,
had to pay taxes on £103.
According to the town records, he was one of the last of the settlers who
obtained, by action of the town, full rights to the commonage. This was granted
to him on April 3, 1684, as a "first lot of commonage." A first lot was fifty acres
of ground.
On March 10, 1687, he purchased the Point Farm from Giles Sylvester. This
is the most northeastern end of of Long Island. He lived there until his death,
November 26, 1726, The farm was occupied by his family for four generations.
He was a noted fox-huntger, and it is reported that he killed sixty eight foxes in the year 1700.
In the list of all of the inhabitants of Southold in the year 1698, taken by order of the Earl of Bellomont, his family named as follows: Jeremiah Veale, Anne Veale, Thomas Veale, Jeremiah Veale, Jr. (III), Mary Veale [sister or wife of Jeremiah III ?, probably his sister]. He is not responsible for this spelling of the family name, as can be seen from transcripts of his signature.
His will, dated January 2, 1722, was probated January 31, 1726/1727 "in the
thirteenth year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord King George."
His time-worn gravestone near Orient is a thick, low, blue slab, bearing a
cherub's head with wings and the inscription,: Here Lies Ye Body of Mr. Jeremiah Vail, Aged 77 years Decd Nov y 28th 1726. His widow survived him less than a month and died December 23, 1726.
CHILDREN:
i. JEREMIAH, who married [possibly] Mary (____) before 1698 [unless the Mary listed in the 1698 census was actually his sister Mary, not his wife Mary, as is likely].
II. THOMAS, m. Elizabeth Constable. He d. 5 Aug 1741.
iii. MARY, m. John Goldsmith who she survived and was named in his will. [This probably was the Mary listed in the 1698 census.]
iv. MARTHA, m. in 1707, Capt. Ephraim Horton.

JAMES CORNISH
James Cornish was a schoolteacher who traveled up and down the Connecticut River teaching in towns from Northampton, MA, to Norwalk, CT. He also served as Clerk of the Courts in Northampton. Cornish settled for a period in Westfield, MA, where he served as the first town clerk and at one time owned the area now known as Tolland and Granville, MA, supposedly purchasing the land from an Indian called "Captaine Toto" on June 10, 1686. It is believed he had a first wife but no record of her name or any issue has been found.

On one of his teaching assignments, Cornish met twice-widowed Phebe Brown Lee Larabee; they married some time before 1661 when he assumed the administration of the late Greenfield Larabee’s estate and the guardianship of his four children with Phebe. James and Phebe (Brown Lee Larabee) Cornish had two sons of their own, Gabriel and James, before her death in 1664. James raised the combined family of six children (entries in the Diary of Joshua Hempstead, a grandson of Phebe, describe trips to Simsbury to see "Uncle James" and "Cousin James").

By 1698, the elder James “Old Mr. Cornish” had relocated from Windsor to Simsbury with his son James and James’ family. At his death on October 29, 1698, sons James and Gabriel Cornish inherited their father’s estate. Gabriel Cornish died just a few years later in Westfield, MA; James Cornish flourished in Simsbury, becoming one of the first deacons appointed by the First Church and a trusted leader of the community.

!20. JOHN5 WEAVER, (William,4 (7) Clement,3 Clement,2 Clement1) born Nov. 24, 1701, in East
Greenwich, R. I., and he died there Aug. 12, 1756.

He married (1) his own cousin, Mary Weaver, daughter of his uncle Clement and aunt Hannah
(Long) Weaver. She was born in East Greenwich March 19, 1710; m. April 18, 1728, and d. between
April 28, 1744, when she signed a deed, and Dec., 1747. He married (2) Dec. 22, 1747, Hannah
(Bailey) Wood, a widow with four children. She was born in East Greenwich Jan. 9, 1707-8, dau. of
Hugh and Ann (Bailey) Wood. The date of her death has not been learned, but she was living in East
Greenwich Jan. 23, 1786, when she released her dower in certain real estate her second husband had
owned in that town.

He was admitted a freeman of East Greenwich April 10, 1728, and of the colony April 30, 1728. In
1749 he removed to West Greenwich and on Aug. 29 he was made a freeman of that town. He
returned to East Greenwich in 1754 or early in 1755. He owned much real estate.

His widow Hannah was appointed to administer his estate Sept. 4, 1756. His inventory, Aug. 12,
1756, amounted to œ1714-8-8, and included various silver articles, as sleeve buttons, girdle buckles,
clasps, etc., a few books among which were "one old Psalter, one old Spelling book, a Rethmetick
book and a Primmer." He had cooper's tools œ21 and carpenter's tools œ5. There were notes due
him from Harris Weaver, Daniel Weaver and others.

June 24, 1758, Hannah Weaver, as administratrix of John, filed a claim for 52 weeks board of John's
son at twenty shillings per week and for her own "extraordinary service as administratrix." She also
requested that Clement Weaver, son of John, be summoned before the council "she having good
reason to suspect" that he has possession of some of his late father's personal estate. (East
Greenwich Council Records.)

New person from corrupted files
Adriaan (male) sex was reversed, all children and wife removed and put back together. This is a new PID because of the deletion of the former PID: LCYQKTL had the reversed sex for the couple.

original: Sealed to spouse, Sarah Perley on 15 Sep 1998.The were married in 1687 ( after his death date) in the Ogden temple. She was probably the spouse of Joseph Andrews, to whom she is also sealed along with 10 children.

Possibly confused with father
Robert Andrews 99G8-DZT is cited as "married" to the same woman as this person. Given birth dates and the complete information for Robert Andrews 99G8-DZT, this individual is probably a duplicate of Robert Andrews LH65-8PQ, the son of the other Robert Andrews, which would make him a Jr.

!AFN: 92FP-SS !BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: He probably lived at Stow, Massachusetts until after his majority, as he owned land there. He removed to Plainfield about 1699, where he is called "senior" to distinguish him from his brother-in-law Thomas Stevens (called Jr. or 2nd), son of Henry Stevens of Stonington, CT. He was made an ensign in the militia in 1717 and was thereafter referred to in records as "Ensign Thomas Stevens." He was Deputy to the General Court of Connecticut in 1725 and 1730. Per ""The Stevens Family: Descendants of the brothers Thomas and Cyprian Steevens," compiled by Edwin Henry Stevens and edited by Elizabeth Stevens Polk (Windsor, VT, 1941). !LAND RECORDS IN PLAINFIELD, CT. INVOLVING THOMAS STEVENS: Plainfield, CT got off to a difficult start when two tribes of Indians sold the same land to two different groups of settlers. Finally, in 1704, twenty four property owners agreed to throw all holdings into common ownership and to reapportion by lot. John Fellows, Stephen Hall, Thomas Stevens, Sr., and Thomas Stevens who was son of Henry Stevens and husband of Ruth Hall were named in the list.Thomas Stevens Sr. was one of those selected to lay out 40 lots of 100 acres each Plots of land allotted to Thomas Stevens, Sr. were recorded in 1706 and 1707. Another division was made in 1707, which include land exclusive of the meadow and the general field being divided into five fields called "Eights." Per "LYBERTIE," by Henry Vernon Hall (privately printed by author, Salt Lake City, UT, 1975).
