!17. WILLIAM5 WEAVER, (William,4 (7) Clement,3 Clement,2 Clement1) born Sept. 19, 1695, in
East Greenwich, R. I. He died in North Kingstown shortly before July 9, 1759, when his widow was
appointed to administer his estate. (Probate Records of North Kingstown, Vol. 9, p. 80.) The latest
mention of him, while living is found in a lawsuit Feb., 1758. He married Alice (???) whose surname
and date of birth have not been found. She probably died in 1754, for she joined him in a land sale
Nov. 29, 1753, and he married, second, in Nov., 1755, Mary Fowler, a widow, who survived him and
was appointed to administer his estate as above.

He was a "yeoman" or farmer and also a licensed "innholder," at least a part of the time, for in the
doings of the Council of East Greenwich it is set forth that on June 30, 1733, it was "Resolved that
William Weaver of this town have libertie to sell Strong Drinke in the house wherein he now Dwells,
he keeping Good order upon each Training Day that Capt. (???) calls his Company to Train at said
Weaver's House in this present year 1733 betweene the hours of Eight of the Clock in the morning
and Twelve of the Clock at night and noe longer," on penalty of a fine. He was also licensed other
years. His house was the meeting place of the Town Council.

He seems to have lived continuously in East Greenwich up to 1754. He served as surveyor of
highways in 1727, waywarden 1728, overseer of highways 1729-1731, 1740, 1743, town sergeant
1733-1736, and member of the town council 1738-1744.

He did not remove to North Kingstown until 1754, sometime between April and August, doubtless
soon after the death of his wife Alice.

Jan. 12, 1716-17 his father, William Weaver, gave him a small lot which was part of his own farm and
was forty-one poles by sixty-two poles. It was bounded on a highway and on the giver's land. (East
Greenwich Land Evidence 2, 272.)

July 18, 1718, Clement Weaver of East Greenwich deeded to his "cousin," William Weaver, son of his
deceased brother William, all his right in lands owned by his said brother. (3, 59.)

July 18, 1718, whereas William Weaver of East Greenwich lately deceased intestate, whereby all his
lands descend to his eldest son, yet notwithstanding, said eldest son, William Weaver, for the better
support of his "honored mother" and to "enable her to bring up the rest of my brothers and sisters and
to put her in a better way to pay my Father's debts, as his administratrix, and that each of my
Brothers may have part of their Father's lands and my Sisters have something of a portion more than
the Law would allow them" deeds to his mother in lieu of her thirds, life tenure in some fifty-six acres
or so of the homestead and buildings thereon, bounded by a line extending from the middle of the
south line to the middle of the north line of said farm and is bounded

Page 88
on a highway and on Benjamin Spencer. After her death this land shall return to my six brothers as
follows: To brother Benjamin eight acres, he to pay sister Alice œ4. To brother Harrison the house
father lived in and ten acres adjoining it, he to pay Alice œ5. To brother Thomas ten acres adjoining
Harrison's, to pay Alice œ5 six months after receiving the land. To brother Clement ten acres
adjoining Thomas', and he is to pay Alice œ5. To brother Joseph ten acres adjoining Clement, he to
pay Alice œ5. To brother John eight acres adjoining Joseph, he to pay Alice œ5. (3. 59.)

The law of primogeniture made him the sole heir to the estate of his father who died intestate. Instead
of keeping it he magnanimously shared it with his mother, brothers and sisters. Such an example of
generosity, filial love and brotherly kindness was rare in those days and not at all common in these
days when the application of the Golden Rule is being urged as never before.

Nov. 28, 1752, administration on the estate of Captain Richard Weaver, of East Greenwich,
deceased, was offered to his eldest brother William, who declined, requesting that their father,
William Weaver, be appointed, which was done.

He owned several tracts of land in East Greenwich, West Greenwich and North Kingstown.

CHILDREN (all recorded in East Greenwich):

the printed Vital Records.
As far as known he never married, but the settlement of his estate shows that he left neither widow
nor offspring.

Job, Jeremiah, Edward, Elizabeth, Philip and Charles.

VII. Alice,6 b. Aug. 28, 1725; m. Feb. 9, 1746, Benjamin Corey, son of Joseph.

married, second, before March 2, 1752, Caleb Gardner of Exeter, R. I.

There is some uncertainty about the identity of Andrew's wife. If I am reading my notes correctly, Torrey, New England Marriages Prior to 1700, has Andrew married to Deborah (Leffingwell) Crow, widow of Nathaniel Crow. However, there is no Deborah among the children of Sergeant Thomas and Mary (Bushnell) Leffingwell in either the Bushnell Genealogy or the Leffingwell Record. Moreover, if the date imputed for Deborah's birth (1673) is correct, it would be pushing the envelope a bit to have her parents married in September 1672 and their son Thomas born on 11 March 1674 -- unless, of course, Deborah was conceived "out of wedlock," which might possibly explain her absence from public (and published) records. According to Ancestors of the Bingham Family of Utah, Deborah was the daughter not of Sergeant Thomas, but of Lieutenant Thomas Leffingwell -- his last child, born sometime between 1660 and 1665. This attribution is based on a will, cited in the Warner genealogy, in which Lieutenant Thomas named Deborah, wife of Andrew Warner. If born between 1660 and 1665, however, Deborah would have been Andrew's senior by eight to thirteen years: not an impossible proposition, certainly, but not probable.

4164 There were two John Smiths in Colonial America born about the same time.
One was born 13 Jul 1672 in Watertown, MA, the son of Daniel and Mary (Grant) Smith. He married Susanna ----- 24 Jun 1694 and had a number of children in Milton, MA, before moving to Stonington, CT. He and Susanna and most of his children died in Connecticut.

The other, a Captain, was born 9 Jan 1672 in Dover, NH, the son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Bickford) Smith and married Susannah Chesley on 17 Jun 1694 in Dover. They had a number of children in Dover and lived and died there.

Sources, places, and memories do not match
Sources show John Smith married to Susanna and having children in Newton, Middlesex, Massachusetts. Some sources show John and Susanna having children in Watertown, Middlesex, Massachusetts, which may be since the two towns are situated close to each other. Then there are sources and memories for John Smith and Susannah living in Connecticut. I believe there are at least two different people here that are all mixed together. If anyone has any wisdom to straighten this out I would love it!!

Joseph Messenger and Samuel Thompson settled in DeRuyter in 1795. The former located on lot No 20 and built the first tavern in town. It was a large, double log house. The Messenger Tavern was for many years the famous stopping place for the numberous immigrants coming in to settle the Lincklaen purchase and many a wayworn traveler had cause to remember with grattitude the kindness of the proprietor. Mr. Messenger was employed by Mr. Lincklaen to cut through the west road (which runs on the ridge east of DeRuyter) to the town of Lincklaen, and which the older inhabitants remember to have long born the name of "Joe Road". Upon the farm that he took up, cleared, and cultivated, Joseph Messenger died and was buried. Upon the head-board above his remains the following epitaph was written, although not transferred to the marble his family reared in affectionate memory was never the less true.

This "Daniel of Exeter, Rhode Island" was the pioneer of the Gill family in Springfield, Vermont. He was a carpenter and mill-wright by trade. He moved from Exeter, R. I. to Springfield, Vt. about the year 1770.
Previous to his becoming a resident of Springfield, the original proprietors of the town had, at a meeting held by them March 31, 1763, voted to give any person starting a sawmill on their grant of twenty acres of land a set of irons for the mill, on condition that said mill be kept in good repair for fifteen years. This right had been secured by Simeon Stevens and Page Harriman and they by deed, dated Feb. 8, 1771, transferred to Daniel Gill, Jr. the tract in question being locatec at the lower falls on the Black River, now the site of Goulds Mill. (1900)
Daniel proceeded to blast the rock on his pruchase preparatory to building, expending considderable time and money. Richard Morris claimed the tract by title from the Province of N.Y., and although overtures were made to Mr. Gill by Mr. Morris to settle the difficulty, he abandoned the project.
Mr. Gill was elected a member of the Legislature in 1784 and again in 1792. While he was attending the session at Rutland, in the latter year, he was presented with a petition signed by 195 inhabitants of Springfield and vicinity bearing the date of Oct. 19, 1792, appointing him and Captain Abner Bisbee agents to select homesteads for them in Upper Canada, in response to a proclamation issued by John G.Somcoe who was Governor of that Province. Returning from that mission, Daniel was taken sick and died at Singsing, N.Y.

4169 This Elijah's correct marriage
This Elijah was not actually married to Miss Jennings and Miss Millard; it is a mistake in the Phelps Family of America book. Elijah's son Elijah was married to "m. 1st Lois Millard. He m. 2nd Widow Ann Hill, or Mrs. Jennings by name. She d. in Canada West, 7 July, 1843, aged 78 years. ...Child, b. Canada West, by 1st wife: Eliza, b. ___, d. aged 7 years." #1330, image page 392 It seems more probable that these ladies were married to Elijah, Jr. since more information is associated with them. It would be too much of a coincidence for both Elijah's to have wives by those names.

life sketch
First generation to come to America from Germany. According to the Loucks Genealogy book published in 1940, he was from Illstein, Germany (can't find on map?). Johann married Maria Catharina and sailed from Rotterdam, Holland on 7/15/1709, as seen on the New York Subsistence List, page 287. There were 9 Laux/Loucks families in America by 1710. Johann and Catharina settled in West Camp, New York, near the Hudson River. He was under contract by the British Government to produce ships stores, but it was unprofitable, so they were kept in camps and supported by government grants. They eventually moved to Schenectady, Schoharie, then settled in Stone Arabia along the Mohawk Valley. They settled on a tract of land consisting of 12,700 acres with other settlers.

Johan Dietrich would never have thought while coming to America that years later his son Johann Adam and two grandsons (Lieutenant Peter Laux and Joost Laux) would be involved as freedom fighters and soldiers in the Revolutionary War.

Johan and all five of his sons were Patriots in the American Revolution. They were in the 2nd regiment under Colonel Jacob Klock, as were George Getman and his sons.

Johann Dietrich Laux is my 7x great-grandfather.

I believe daniel is attached to wrong Thomas barnes-trying to correct
Evidently this is a common issue. There were two Thomas BARNES’s living in the area at the same time. One of them is a very significant story, and that Thomas BARNES from Farmington Connecticut was involved in a Indian massacre and also his wife “Mary elizabeth Brockett BARNES was hung as a witch. so I think what happens is people just attach to the most famous story because it’s the one that pulls up fastest. But as far as I can see, Mary Brockett, BARNES, and Thomas BARNES from Farmington Connecticut did not have a son named Daniel. Their children are quite well documented But there was also a Thomas BARNES living in New haven Connecticut at same time, about 40 minutes (now) this would have been hours away then. And he did have a son named Daniel and Daniel was born in New Haven not Farmington so it leads me to think until I can get my hands on some more documentation that Daniel has been for years attached to the wrong family

Joseph Johnson?
In Isaac Johnson's biography, is says that he and Elizabeth had a son named Joseph. In Isaac's biography it states that Joseph's baptism was in 1645, not his death. He died on February 3, 1729 in Middleton, Connecticut according to Isaac's biography.

Isaac Johnson was the son of John. Among
Isaac Johnson was the son of John. Among wills of Suffolk Co., Mass., is rec. that of John Johnson of Roxbury 1659 - "my sonne Isaac Johnson" was appointed testator and one of the executors. Isaac Johnson, the son, was the great Indian leader and was a very brave man. On July 6, 1675, a body of fifty-two praying Indians (Eliot's converts) marched from Boston for Mt. Hope under "Intreped" Isaac Johnson of Roxbury. On December 19, 1675, Capt. Isaac Johnson was killed while storming the Narragansett stronghold when the fierce tribe was destroyed at the famous fort fight. The roll of his company included his son-in-law Henry Bowen. His residence was next to Eliot.

Isaac Johnson's will dated March 8, 1673, and proved Feb 10, 1676, Roxbury, Massachusetts, names sons Isaac and Nathaniel. Freeman at Roxbury, MA, Mar 4, 1635. Captain of the Roxbury Company 1663, the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company 1667, and in the Narragansett Expedition1675. Isaac was killed at the head of his company in the Great Swamp Fight of King Philip's War. His military career is detailed in "Soldiers in King Philip's War" by George M. Bodge (Leominster, MA: 1896), pages 159-163.

ISAAC JOHNSON, eldest son of Capt. John and Margery Johnson was born in England and came to New England with his parents in July 1630. He was made freeman Mar. 4, 1635 and married Jany. 20, 1636-7 Elizabeth Porter. Both were members of John Eliot's church. He was elected Captain of the Rocksberry military company June 13, 1653, having previously been ensign. He was a member of the Artillery Co. in 1645 and was chosen its captain in 1667. He was representative to the General Court in 1671. He was killed Dec. 19, 1675.
CAPT. ISAAC JOHNSON AND HIS MENIsaac Johnson was the son of John, of Roxbury. He was born in England, came to Massachusetts with his father's family, probably in the company with Gov. Winthrop. He was admitted freeman March 4, 1635.He was of the Artillery Company in 1645, and was its captain in 1667. He was ensign of the "Rocksberry" military company previous to 1653, and on June 13th of that year ws elected captain. He was representative in 1671.He married Elizabeth Porter, of Roxbury, January 20, 1637, and had Elizabeth, born Dec 24, 1637; John, born Nov. 3, 1639, died 1661; Mary, born 24 April 1642; Isaac, baptized Jan 1644; Joseph, baptized 9 Nov 1645, died soon; Nathaniel, born 1 May 1647. the daughter Elizabeth married Henry Bowen, who became lieutenant of his company and was in the Swamp Fight. The Bowens, with many other Roxbury people, removed sometime after 1686 to the township of New Roxbury, granted them by Massachusetts Colony, but was afterwards found to be within the connecticut bounds and was renamed Woodstock. The eldest son Isaac married Mary Harris and removed to Middletown, Conn.Isaac's son Joseph inherited his grandather's Narraganset claim, being then of Woodstock. The captain's daughter Mary married, in 1663, William Bartholomew, and removed to Branford, Conn. The youngest son, Nathaniel Johnson, married Mary Smith in 1667 and sometime after 1683 removed, probably to Marlborough. Through these four surviving children Johnson's descendants were quite numerous. His widow died Aug. 1683.On the 6th of July, 1675, while the forces under Major Savage were at Mount Hope, Capt. Johnson was sent with a smal escort to conduct the fifty-two friendly Indians, raised by Maj. Gookin, to the army. From the fragment of a letter from Capt Johnson to the court, dated at Boston July 10, 1675, we learn that a company of these Indians was sent back from Mount Hope with him, and that some trouble occurred with one of the oldest, called Tom, at Woodcock's Garriso, where they were resting on the march. This is the letter as it remains. I am not sure that this is not the whole of the letter or statement:'Upon the 4th day of this week being at Wood cockes house and the Inglish and the Indians geting some refreshment and fixing their arms there was one from the oldest of them Indians that was sent backe with us from the Army and withdrew himselfe from our company under the pretence of geting a helve for his hachet but staying long we sent out 6 men to see if they could find him. In their search they foud his hachet and a new knife: of his and returned without him we being desirous if it might be to find what had become of him sent againe 6 men they could not yet find him, we went to super (that is we seaven Inglish) before it was quite darke and while we were at super the said Tom did make aproach towards the other Indians and was deserned by them and some of them called to him (some way it was one or more of the Indian Sentinells called to him) and bid him stand but he would not but fled away upon the which there being some stire or commosion amongst the indians we rose from super and went out they telling us what was the caus of the tumult amongst them; there was an indian seen as before and now was run away telling of us which way he went I bad them follow and see if they could each him and Woodcock sent out his doggs also they did Boone take him and one of the indians laying hold of him this' indian did strike him on the side of the necke with a hatchet which he had borrowed to get a helve for his owne; but the indian that was strooke by sum indians preventing the force of the blow the hurt was small which otherwise might have beene mortall for anythihg we know; we Inglish making all the hast to them we could did rescue the man that is that Tom out of the rest of the indians hands as wee did apprehend caus lest he should have beene pulled inpeeces or killed by them we had him in to Woodcocks hous; I asked him the reson of his doing after that maner as he did doing as though he intended mischeefe where as he had promised the governor of the bay he would doe faithful service against Phillip and his men; he answered he was counseled to doe as he did by Samson and antoher long Island indian they two indians were called and I asking of them did give Tom counsel to doe us hurt or to make tro e amongst us amson first spake dening to have given Tom any such counsell; then the long island indian spook denieing any such thing: upon which said Tom laid two peeces of mony in my hand and told me they each of them gave him one of them peeces to hire hime to do what he did: they bothe denied the giving of him any mony woodcoke being by desired he might be the mony I gave it him; he says Tom had that mony of him he having BOB much lickors of him as cam to 3d he changed a shilling for the said Tom and gave him a 6 d & a 3 d and that was the 6 d & 3 d which Tom did not denie. I told Tom he pretending see as he had done to the governor as before and marching with us now part of two dayes and serve us thus he did acknowledg he had rebelld and deserved to dye only desired he might die a quick death by which I doe supose his meaning was that he might not be delivered into the ban& of the Indians Boston 18 July 1675 youer honuor Servant Isaac Johnson.Mass Archives, vol. 67, p. 219.Here we see the prejudice against the Indian blinding the Captain to the real culprit Woodcock, whose "lickors" had made the poor savage 'crazy drunk'.On July 15th, on the news of the attack upon Mendon, Capt. Johnson was sent out with a company to relieve that town, and ws jlined there by Capt. Prentice and his troop about July 21st. The two captains address letters to the court July 23d, explaining the situation of affairs at Mendon; these letters are lost, but notice of them occurs (Mass. Arch. Vol. 67, p. 226) in a Court Order of July 26th, commanding the return of both companies, except a guard to be left at Mendon by Capt. Johnson.Upon the mustering of forces for the Narraganset campaign, Capt. Johnson ws placed in command of a company made up of men from Roxbury, Dorcester, Milton, Braintree, Weymouth, Hingham, and Hull, seventy-five all told. Eight more were impressed, but did not appear. The company took part in the memorable march and attack on the fort, as before related, and the brave captain was among the first to fall while gallantly leading his men across the fallen tree trunks at the entrance to the fort. "After a night spent in the open air without covering and a toilsome march through deep snow, the combined troops of Mass. Plymouth and Conn. arrived before the great fort of the Narragansetts near Pocasset R. I. At about one o'clock the little army moved to the attacks, the advance led by Capt. Johnson, who was killed at the first fire."

His widow died Aug. 13, 1683. His will dated March 8, 1673, was proved Feby. 10, 1676. Inventory œ579:12:6.
