4005 | Short bio James Parshall Terry (1830–1918) was born in Ontario, Canada and baptized Mormon in 1840. He emigrated to the Salt Lake Valley in 1848–49 and settled in Draper, Utah. In April–May 1857 he worked as a freighter, and later that year he served under Lot Smith as a scout and saboteur. In 1862 he moved to Rockville, Washington County, Utah, where he served as a county selectman, bishop’s counselor, and president of a co-op store. While living at Rockville he made frequent freighting trips to Salt Lake City, and in 1864 he bought a half interest in a molasses mill and cotton gin there. In the 1870s he was elected vice-president of the United Order and served as director of a co-op herd. He spent his final years in Hinckley, Millard County, Utah. In 1838 he removed with his father's family to Missouri, whence the family with the rest of the Saints were driven out under the exterminating order of Gov. Lilburn W. Boggs. The Terry family settled temporarily in Pike county, Ill., where young James P. was baptized in June, 1840, by Wm. Allred. In the summer of 1843 the family moved to Nauvoo, Ill., where they resided until 1846, when they became participants in the general exodus of the Saints. His father lost nearly everything he owned during the drivings and stopped for a time at Carterville on Mosquito creek, Iowa. While stopping temporarily at Winter Quarters, James P. was ordained an Elder. The family migrated to Great Salt Lake Valley in 1849, arriving there Oct. 15th. Bro. Terry was ordained a Seventy by John Pack March 4, 1855, and became a member of the 8th quorum of Seventy. In 1856 (Nov. 2rid) he married Mary Richards (daughter of John and Agnes Hill Richards) who subsequently bore her husband eleven children. Subsequently he married Sarah K. Lemons, a widow, by whom he had one child (a boy). After living with him about three years she asked for and obtained a bill of divorce. In 1862 Bro. Terry moved to Southern Utah with his family, arriving at Rockville Jan. 13, 1863. The following year he was commissioned as a captain of militia in the Iron Military District. In 1877 (May 6th) he was ordained a High Priest and set apart as first counselor to Bishop Chas. N. Smith in the Rockville Ward, which position he held until March 22, 1891. He acted as school trustee about fourteen years in the Rockville school district, and was also road supervisor about the same length of time. For two or three years he held the office of selectman in Washington county. In 1887-88 he filled a mission to Canada and the Un ited States. On his way home, April 20, 1888, as he was traveling between Toquerville and Virgen City on foot, he was overtaken by deputy U. S. marshals and arrested on a charge of unlawful cohabitation. After examination at Silver Reef he was placed under $1500 bonds to appear at Beaver May 11, 1888. On his appearance in court on that day the Prosecution failed to make out a case against him and he was consequently discharged. In 1902 (Feb. 24th) Elder Terry was ordained a Patriarch by Apostle Mathias F. Cowley, and since 1899 he has been a resident of Hinckley, Millard county, Utah. Bro. Terry has ever been a faithful and consistent Latter-day Saint, ever on hand to defend the principles of the gospel and to labor in any capacity in which the authorities of the Church have asked him to labor. As an aged man he still enjoys good health and is generally beloved and respected by all who know him. He is the father of twelve children and has at the present time a numerous posterity. His wife, Mary, died May 17, 1902, at Hinckley, Millard county, after doing a great deal of ordinance work for the dead in the St. George Temple; in this vicarious labor her daughter and others assisted her. Both men were called/nicknamed “JOOST” or “JOST” in their records. They are VERY COMMONLY confused with each other. JOOST1 (b.1754) = ID# GQ5X-6TF JOOST2 (b.1756) = ID# 242T-FBM ============= JOOST1 (b.1754) was christened/baptized at the Dutch Reformed Church in Stone Arabia, NY, Colonial British America. — born : 22 February 1754 — birth location : German Flatts, NY — baptized : 01 Mar 1754, at Stone Arabia, NY — father : John George Laux (1715-1790) [ID# LZ1R-651 ] — mother : Gertraud Deigertin (1726-1825) [ID# LZ1R-6R4 ] — married : Anna Nancy Brunner (1760-desceased) [ID# MJ5Q-QK9] — marriage date : (unknown) — death : 1798 — death location : S.Stormont, Ontario, Can — burial : Stormont, Ontario, Canada Likewise, it is well-documented that JOOST2 sided with the Tory Loyalists during the Revolutionary War and eventually moved to Canada (Ontario) after the war. All of his children were born in Ontario, Canada. Both he and his wife Anna died and were buried in Canada. ============= JOOST2 (b.1756) was christened/baptized at the Dutch Reformed Church in Stone Arabia, NY, Colonial British America. — born : 15 September 1756 — birth location : Stone Arabia, NY — baptized : 9 Dec 1756, at Stone Arabia, NY — father : Johann Adam Loucks (1722-1773) [ID# 2DTP-9XT ] — mother : Catherine Elizabeth Schnell (1719-1797) [ID# LTHD-G95 ] — married : Margretha Mabie (1759-1839) [ID# LY31-CP4 ] — marriage date : 1780 — death : 20 April 1825 (confirmed by headstone) — death location : Ellery Center, NY, USA — burial : Fluvanna Cemetery, Ellicott, NY, USA It is well-documented that JOOST1 was a Revolutionary Patriot who ended up residing in New York after the Revolutionary War. All of his children were born in New York. Both he and his wife Margretha died and were buried in upper New York state. ============= There are big discrepancies in the Edwin Merton McBrier book (especially on pp.16-17) which states that McBrier’s JOOST — was born 09 Dec 1756 (JOOST2=correct) — died in 1798 (JOOST2=incorrect) — died in Oppenheim, NY (JOOST2=correct, he died in 1825–see headstone photo in FamilySearch Memories tab above) — married Margretha Mabie, in 1780 (JOOST2=correct, name & marriage year are correct). From my research on Edwin Merton McBrier, his wife’s maiden name was Carrie Loucks [ID# K84T-37D ]), and on p.17 he indicates that his wife’s JOOST relative was a Revolutionary Patriot. So I deduce that “his” JOOST is indeed intended to be JOOST2, the JOOST who settled in New York after the War. My assumption is correct that McBrier must have mistakenly gathered the death demographics of the wrong JOOST. But fortunately McBrier did indeed get JOOST2’s wife’s name (Margretha Mabie) correct on p.16-17, because she was indeed born and passed away in New York. And most of JOOST2’s children were born & raised in New York. We can further deduce that JOOST2 is the NY Loucks family intended for McBrier’s book. Therefore, JOOST1 and family migrated to Canada with his family during or following the Revolutionary War. BOTH gentlemen have similar names and were christened two years apart in the same Reformed Dutch Church in Stone Arabia, NY. Yet they both led very dissimilar lives and ended up on two opposing sides of a very pivotal war that decided the futures of their home countries. ============= ** Of interest…Edwin Merton McBrier is a first cousin to the famous 5-and-dime store entrepreneur, F.W. Woolworth (through Woolworth’s mother, Fanny McBrier Woolworth). Who remembers the store named “Woolworths”?? 1756 1756 1754 baptism record as John If you look at the Ancestry image showing the handwritten record in the Dutch Church's 1754 baptism record, the boy's name is John Jost whose parents are John Gerrit (?) In the declaration of his wartime service he listed four terms of enlistment. He enlisted, first in March 1776 in Capt. Andrew Finch's Company in Col. Peter Gansevoort's Regiment (3rd New York Continental Line) to serve 10 months. He was stationed nearly the whole of this time, he stated, at Fort George and was discharged at Albany on 1 Jan. 1777. His 2nd enlistment began shortly afterwards, in the winter of 1777, as an enlisted man in the Company of Capt. Christian House in the 2nd Regiment of the Tryon County Militia. He spent nearly all the year 1777 on active duty in this company and regiment. During this enlistment he participated in the battle of Oriskany 6 Aug. 1777. His third tour of service began in March 1778 as a boatman in Captain Peterson's Company engaged in carrying provisions from Schenectady to Rome up the Mohawk River. This tour of service lasted for 10 months, ending with discharge at Schenectady 1 Jan. 1779. His fourth and final term of service was in the ranks of Col. Marinus Willet's special task force organized to break the power of the Tory and Indian forces in the Mohawk valley. During this enlistment he participated in the battle at Johnstown, New York, 25 Oct. 1781. Joseph signed this affidavit Jost Laux. His pension was denied because he failed to keep his discharge papers. !He and his wife and 5 of their children came to Chautauqua County from Cazenovia, Madison County, New York in 1814. In Sept. of that year he purchased Lots 11 and 12, Twp 2, Range 12, in the southeastern section of Ellery Twp. The five children that came with him at this time were John, Daniel, Hiriam, Margaret and Polly. Later his older sons Joseph, Henry, Peter, David and daughter Charity came to live on the 200 acres that he had purchased for $500. 4037 | Source: Norma Smith Keith Family Record. Source: Norma Smith Keith Family Record. Lived at Isle of Wight County, VA; Johnson Co. NC, Orange (now Alamance)county NC Ref: Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy. Contentnea (Nahunta) Monthly Meeting, North Carolina LDS North Carolina records indicate an approximate birth year of 1728.This family is also well documented in the LDS records and anydifferences between previous sources will be noted on the individualspage notes. LDS NC #20,465 through 20,478. All children of this marriageare documented in the LDS records, with the names of their parents. Somemarriages for the children are recorded in this group of pages also. WFT Vol.2, pedigrees #3320 and 2330 list the wife of John Jr. as AnnFarmer. These pedigree lines trace the family back through Talbot Co.Maryland. Wft Vol. 3, pedigree #6315 lists the children through a different linewhich migrated to Clinton Co. Ohio and Howard Co. Indiana. This indicatessome went to Ohio, (likely remained in the Quakers there) and the balancegoing to Clinton Co. Illinois. This line states John was born in England, which contradicts both the Norma Smith Keith record and Vol. 2. Thisrecord is in error since it does not list any further ancestors of JohnRatcliff Jr. The allied families which moved with this family give morecredit to this migration from Maryland. John's sons, Edam and Abner were executors of the Will of David Smith, who married Mary Martin in Philadelphia PA. John's Daughter Elizabethmarried David Smith's son David. This would indicate a closerelationship between these two families at this early date, which carriedon through the generations into Clinton County Illinois. This very likelydue to their ties to the Quaker faith. This generation is where the Ratcliff, Farmer, and Smith families join inNorth Carolina. Orange County was formed from Blanden in 1752 Dobbs Co. was formed from Johnston Co., in 1758. The children of thismarriage were born in two different counties, however, the family did notmove, the c ounty boundry did. Some of the children were born before thecounty split, some after. This gives the impression that they moved, however, close inspection ofthe location of the county line that separated these two counties givesan indication of the location they lived. Inspection of the 1758 countymap would indicate they lived in the southeastern portion of Johnstoncounty. Dobbs ceased to exist and that location now is in present dayWayne County. The originial county location where this family lived in the time oftheir births was then known as Bath County. Later Johnston, Dobbs, andpresent day Wayne. They did not move, the county changed names andlocations. This explains the multiple records in LDS files which showdifferent locations for birthplace of some of the children. Most arecorrect in the family submissions listing different counties because ofthe formation thereof. But correct county depends on the date of birthand what the county was called at that time, rather than what it is today. | Ratcliff, John Jr. (I312684220978)
