Source 'Genealogy of the Barnes Family' [http://www.bellavistaranch.net/genealogy/barnes.html] Claims

Thomas Barnes of New Haven married a woman named Elizabeth about 1647 and lived with her there until about 1660 or 1665, afterwhich they moved to North Haven, then later to that part of Middletown known as Middlefield, where he died in either 1691 or 1693. He left a will, dated Feb. 25, 1683, in which he names his children. Various online genealogies give his birthplace as Barking, Essex, name his parents, and give the surname of his wife, but as none provide any documentation, these claims are suspect.

Mixing up the Barnes

Little is known about Thomas Barnes' parentage. He is often called "Thomas of Farmington" to distinguish him from other Thomas Barnes' of the era.
Thomas Barnes arrived on the ship William and John with 101 passengers that landed in Boston 1635. In 1636 he became a Proprietor of Hartford, Ct.; a soldier in Pequot Battle of 1637; Sergeant of Farmington Train Band, 1651; admitted as freeman, 1669; received 50 acres for service in Pequot War, 1671. A Thomas Barnes appeared on the Freeman List of the Massachusetts Bay Colony 1630-1645. He became a Freeman - a man who could vote because he took the oath of allegiance to the government of the colony and joined the church - in May 1645 at Hingham, Massachusetts.
He was one of the soldiers in the Pequot War fought in 1637. The Pequot War (1637), the first major conflict between Indians and whites in New England, set a brutal precedent for subsequent Indian-white warfare. The Pequot's were accused of murdering two white men but refused to yield up the suspected killers. Puritan authorities decided to retaliate, a decision reinforced by Pequot resistance against new Connecticut settlements. On May 26, 1637, a force of white soldiers together with Mohegan and Narragansett warriors attacked the principal Pequot village, burned it, and slaughtered its inhabitants. The surviving Pequot's were relentlessly pursued, until the tribe was largely destroyed. . In 1639, Thomas Barnes received land grants from the Colony for that service: 6 acres in Hartford and later 50 acres in Farmington, where he settled with the first party in 1646. Farmington at this early period included the territory of Southington, New Britain, Plainville, Bristol, Burlington, and Avon of the present day. After 1646, he resided in Farmington until his
Untangling the Many Thomas Barnes family excerpt: Thomas Barnes, whom we entitle THOMAS of HARTFORD, set sail from England to the West Indies on the 2nd of September, 1635 on the ship "William & John" transported to Saint Kitts or Saint Christopher. Thomas possible arrived in New England on a trading ship from the West Indies. He was born circa 1615 in Essex County England and died in 1688 in Farmington, Hartford, Connecticut. This Thomas Barnes is the Progenitor of the Barnes family in this book.

Note: There are multiple Thomas Barnes as described in The Barnes Family Yearbook. It appears that they have been commingled in the past in the various records. See

There were four Thomas Barnes and they are often confused
I'm a direct descendant of Thomas Barnes. Four Thomas Barneses migrated from England to America from approximately 1634 and 1656, and all settled relatively closely (CT and MA). They are OFTEN confused, and Ancestry is a mess. From our family history:
Thomas of Hingham was born in England in 1602 and died in Hingham MA 29 November 1672.
Thomas of New Haven was born 26 August 1623 and died 10 June 1691 in Middletown, CT.
Thomas of Marlboro was born 18 October 1636 in Barking, Essex and died c. 1697 in Marlboro, MA.

My ancestor set sail from England to St. Kitts on 2 September 1635. The manifest of the William and John lists his age at 20, making him born c. 1615, POSSIBLY in Essex County England. He died 9 June 1688 in Farminton, CT.

Sorry lost who post this. I just changed the alert flag.

Thomas Barnes of Farmington/Hartford
Thomas Barnes was born 1615. His first wife Mary Chapman was hanged for being a witch. She was the last person to die by hanging in Connecticut. Thomas and Mary Chapman had 3 children, as recorded; one girl almost 13 and two younger boys. Sarah, Joseph, and Benjamin.

He then married Mary Andrews of Farmington. He came over on the Wm./John in 1635 and was 21 years old as the record of the ship state. He fought in the Pequot War and was a founder in Farmington and Hartford.

He and Mary Andrews married out of necessity, since he was a widower and left with young children. Chances are she had come to help in the home after Mary Chapman. They had three children and maybe more. Maybe Barnes- 1663–1749. Thomas Barnes - 1665–1742 Ebenezer Barnes - 1676-1756.

Hereafter referred to as "Thomas of New Haven," came to New Haven when still a boy, and no mention is found of his name until about 1644, when he became of age, and shared in the land distribution. (Savage confused the Thomases, assuming several different persons to have been one individual.) Thomas of New Haven m. abt. 1647, Elizabeth, whose family name has not been found. She appears to have been his only wife. They resided in New Haven until 1660 or 1665, then they moved to North Haven, and later to that part of Middletown, now Middlefield, where he d. in 1693. They brought up a family of eight ch. all of whom are supposed to have left families who have transmitted the Barnes blood through a dozen generations, and perhaps are at the present time the most numerous and widely distributed branch of the family in America. There were three Thomas Barnes that came from England to America, previous to 1638, known as Thomas Barnes of Hartford, Thomas Barnes of New Haven, and Thomas Barnes of Hingham, how were ancestors of three large branches of Barnes families in America.

An Elizabeth Cade was born 8 April 1620 in Alvingham, Lincolnshire, England to Richard Cade. A marriage between an Elizabeth Cade and William Gutterson took place on May 14, 1644 in Yarburgh, Lincolnshire, England. There is no information to support that this is the same Elizabeth. In fact, based on Elizabeth (___) (Gutterson) Callum giving birth to a daughter, Joanna in 1672, it is very unlikely that the Elizabeth Cade born in 1620 is the same as this Elizabeth ______.

History and Genealogies of Ancient Windsor has a Bliss family which Mary may belong to. Thomas Bliss came to Hartfor 1639 and died 1650. His widow then moved to Springfield. My guess is that Mary is a grandchild of this couple.

He was on many land records and witnessed probate records at Fairfield from as early as 1680 and continuing through 1692. His land purchases in Fairfield County were made from Joseph James, Nathaniel Adame, John Cabel, Josiah Harvey, Joseph Rowland, Cornelius Hull and Thomas Sherwood. It is believed that he first married a daughter of Edward Adams. In his will, Edward stated that he gave land to Samuel, probably an inheritence to his daughter. Samuel's will was dated 2 April 1698, his considerable estate was left to his young wife, Abigail Lockwood, and their daughter.

Samuel Ingalls 1654-1733 called to testify
On September 25, 1690, Samuel Ingalls, son of Henry Ingalls and Mary Osgood Ingalls, and brother of Mary Ingalls Swan, was called to testify in a case involving Mary Ingalls Swan's husband Joshua Swan's younger brother Samuel Swan. Samuel Swan, an 18 year-old acted irrationally and struck a horse belonging to Captain Wainwright. His father, Robert Swan confronted the young man and beat him before he was tried and sentenced to jail. The elder Swan faced no recrimination for physically beating his son as the law allowed corporal punishment by parents against their children. Essex County Court Docs, LDS, note attached to Robert Swan.

Biography

John Edgecombe of New London, Connecticut was the the son of Nicholas Edgecombe of Plymouth, England and Joan (Unknown) Edgecombe.[1][2][3] Although Caulkins suggests,[4] and many family trees state, that John Edgecombe of New London was the same John Edgecombe who was the son of Nicholas Edgecombe and Wilmot (Randell) Edgecombe of Saco, Maine, research subsequent to Caulkins has disproven that relationship.[1][2][3] John Edgecombe himself testified that he was the son of Nicholas Edgecombe of Plymouth, Old England.[3] (For a discussion of all the Edgecombes in America prior to the Revolutionary War, see Alan Taylor's article Edgecombes of Early Colonial America.)

John was probably born in early 1647/8 and was baptized in St. Andrews church in Plymouth, England on March 12, 1647/8.[1][3]

John's father, Nicholas, died in 1649, when John was only one or two years old.[1][5] John's mother, Joan, headed the household and continued to manage Nicholas's brewery business until 1666, when John's older brother, Nicholas Jr., took over as head of the business.[1] Since it was intended that Nicholas Jr. was to inherit the brewing business, John was trained as a tanner.[1]

John came to America and settled in New London, Connecticut about 1673.[1][6] He married Sarah Stallyon in New London on February 9th or November 9th of that year or the following year.[7][8]

John and Sarah had the following children:

1. John, b. November 14, 1675, m. Hannah Hempstead

2. Sarah, b. July 29, 1678, m. John Bolles

3. Joanna, b. March 3, 1679/80, m. Henry Delamore

4. Nicholas, b. January 23, 1681/2

5. Samuel, b. 1690

6. Thomas[3][4]

After Sarah died, perhaps about 1694,[9] John married Elizabeth (Larrabee) Hempstead, the widow of Joshua Hempstead and the mother-in-law of his son, John,[4] perhaps in 1699.[9]

In October 1704, John Edgecombe was among 77 New London men named in a colony grant extending the town’s boundaries northward to include the Mohegan reservation, which had long been claimed by the town but had not been within its legal borders.[10]

Converse speculated that John Edgecombe came to New England to look out for the family's interests in the region. In 1637, Sir Richard Edgecombe had been granted land in Maine (a large portion of the current town of Bowdoinham) by Sir Ferninando Gorges. Because of conflicting claims, the Edgecombe's rights to these lands were disputed for many years. In 1713, John Edgecombe appeared before a commission in Massachusetts on behalf of Sir Richard Edgecombe's heirs to assert their rights to the lands. The issue was not finally resolved, however, until 1769, almost 50 years after John Edgecombe's death, when a court in Portland, Maine found in favor of the conflicting claim of James Bowdoin who had acquired his rights from the Kennebec Company.[3] John Edgecombe's claim on behalf of the heirs of Sir Richard Edgecombe can be seen in the Book of Eastern Claims.[11]

John Edgecombe died in New London on April 11, 1721.[3][4] His estate was valued at £681 and consisted of his home in the town plot and two large farms.[4]

On account of a remarkable escape from death while an infant in arms, John Bolles was led, while still a youth, to pledge himself to the service of God. Now, arfter careful examination into the doctrines of John Rogers, he devotes himself, in abedience to his youthfuf pledge, reverently and enthusiastically to that cause. (See Pat I., Chapter VI.).
