3811 Notes from Hattie Young Sorenson: "Thomas Jones
Notes from Hattie Young Sorenson: "Thomas Jones was a man of some wealth in South Wales. He loved and raised good horses. Thomas and Ruth Jones and their family sailed on the ship "Samuel Curling" on April 19, 1856. They arrived in Boston May 25, 1856. They traveled in cattle cars 1300 miles to Iowa and waited three weeks for handcarts to be made. They were advised to pool their resources with the other 704 people in their handcart company. They traveled in Capt. Edward Bunker's company under Capt. Dan Jones. They traveled 300 miles to Winter Quarters on the Missouri River. Then 1000 miles to Salt Lake City. They were allowed 100 pounds of flour and some bacon to each cart. They had some tea also, but that didn't last long. They were allowed 17 pounds of clothing. After traveling 1 1/2 months they were out of food and it was two days before the relief wagons came. The rule in the company was that if any were sick, they had to be pulled on your own cart. Aunt Margaret had broken her leg and had to be pulled all the way. They were offered big wages to stay in Iowa but they were bound for Zion. Some stayed, but we are told, they either lost the faith or died of cholera. Thomas and Ruth and their children arrived in Salt Lake City October 2, 1856."

There are three daughters that appear on various family group sheets, Mary Jones 12 Oct 1833, Lettice Jones born 7 Mar 1836 and died 19 Jun 1920, and Anna Jones born 16 Feb 1842 and died 1845. These have not been verified.

3812 Notes of Douglas Wright Cruger
Cruger, 1989, Colonial Lineage, p50:
Gershom Proctor was one of the leading citizens of Chelmsford, when it was
still considered the western frontier. H married late in life - his wife was
18 years his junior. Their youngest child was born when Gershom was 62 yrs
old. Gershom left no will, but he left an estate valued at 1683:1:0 pounds, a
substantial fortune for the times.
The name "Gershom" held special significance for Puritan families, already
fond of naming children for favorite characters from the Bible. "Gershom"
means "exile," and was commonly given to the first male born in the New World.

3818 occupation and family history
#2 KS was born in Connecticut, 1778. It was just two years since the American Revolution began. At age seventeen, she married Benjamin Benson in Maple, New York December 15, 1795. They made their home in New York and became parents of twelve children.
Benjamin was a millwright. In 1811, they settled in Bath, Steuben, New York. In 1820 the Benson's built a log raft on the upper Ohio River. They put all their belongings on the raft and floated down to Clark County, Indiana. They built mills on the White River and Gold Roundtown on the Eel River, Indiana in 1825.
In 1832 they were in Clinton county, Indiana, where they were baptized and confirmed. They moved again November 17, 1832, living in Missouri until October 31, 1833, when the mobs destroyed the area. They moved to Warsaw, six miles south of Nauvoo and started over. Benjamin found a job building mills. In 1836 they were again forced out by the mobs.
Benjamin passed away October 7, 1846. Kesiah continued with her son, Jerome, and family to Zion. They were with an independent company, arriving in the fall of 1851. They proceeded to Provo, Utah.
They were living in Provo and built a large adobe house, with an upstairs room on the Provo River. Keziah's son, Jerome, and his wife fell into the Provo River while crossing a foot bridge. She was pulled into the swift waters and drowned. Jerome was carrying the twins and was unable to save her.
Keziah's health failed and she passed away at the age of seventy -eight.

!doc: Records of Springville, Utah Ward Records Keziah Messenger born 6 Dec. 1781. Rebaptized 19 June 1853. The following were rebaptized 19 Oct. 1851: Alford. B., Eveline, Jerome, Mary Rhodes, Mary Benson, Louisa K., Amelia. Something is wrong with this record. Amelia's birth date is given in this record and other records on the Springville Ward film as 6 Oct. 1845. So she would be only 6 years old in 1851. Something is wrong also because in one place it states whe was baptized by J.M. Benson, and in another by L.H. Stewart. I am wondering if Amelia was ever baptized. If she went with her father when he left for Calif. she would bearly be eight and perhaps had not turned 8 by that time. According to the letter Ethel received from her grandson, none of the family joined the church. (Note on back of sheet by Mom,Fern Bartholomew Fronk) May have been born in Lawrenceburg, Conn. An Episcopalian, William immigrated
An Episcopalian, William immigrated to America during the time that civil war had errupted in England between the English Episcopals and the Scottish Presbytarians. On may 10, 1643, William became a freeman at Braintree, Massachusetts. On October 1, 1645, petition 104 was presented to the Massachusetts Bay Colony requesting that William, along with seven other families be granted lands from Pumhane for the purpose of building a plantation. The petition was granted with the provision that the families improve the lands and remain there for a period of twelve months. On October 1, 1651, William purchased nineteen acres of land from James Covey, formerly belonging to Henry Neale in what is now called the Common Street area of Quincy.

3848 Parentage of Penelope Thompson
No record of Penelope's birth has ever been found, and the family Bible makes no mention of Penelope's birth location or the names of her parents. Some later researchers felt that Penelope may be the daughter of Penelope Reynolds and John Thompson Pinfold Street, Saint Philip, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England. However, later research would call this into question because John Thompson and Penelope Reynolds consistently baptized all of their children at St. Philip, but there is no record of a Penelope being baptized by these parents. There are baptismal records for each of their other twelve children. Penelope's age would place her in the middle of these children, and the idea that the parents simply failed to baptize her is suspicious. Furthermore, there are no documents at all to associate Penelope Thompson into this family. The connection was made because of the similarities in the name Penelope and because John Thompson and Penelope Reynolds resided in St. Philip, where Joseph Lewis and Penelope Thompson's children were later baptized. However, it must be recognized that Thompson is a common name, and there are many Thompson families in St. Philip Parish. Current researchers should consider that Penelope's parentage still has not been determined.

Penelope's son William Henry Thompson did create a family records which suggests that Penelope's father might be "John Thompson."

Date of death
Based on original endowment house records, Penelope died before 5 October 1867. On that date Joseph was sealed to Caroline, and Caroline acted as proxy for Penelope so she could also be sealed to Joseph. This means Penelope died in either 1865 or 1866.

We have not yet found a record of her christeningin the parishrecords." But the inscription on her headstone in the Clarkston Cemetery has May29,1817.
