They were dissatisfied with the limited extent of the English Reformation and with the Church of England’s toleration of certain practices associated with the Roman Catholic Church 1. Puritans formed and identified with various religious groups advocating greater purity of worship and doctrine, as well as personal and corporate piety 1. They adopted a covenant theology, and in that sense, they were Calvinists (as were many of their earlier opponents) 1. In church polity, some advocated separation from all other established Christian denominations in favor of autonomous gathered churches 1. These Separatist and Independent strands of Puritanism became prominent in the 1640s, when the supporters of a presbyterian polity in the Westminster Assembly were unable to forge a new English national church 1. By the late 1630s, Puritans were in alliance with the growing commercial world, with the parliamentary opposition to the royal prerogative, and with the Scottish Presbyterians with whom they had much in common 1. Consequently, they became a major political force in England and came to power as a result of the First English Civil War (1642–1646) 1. 1: Wikipedia. 1 en.wikipedia.org 2 worldhistory.org 3 christianity.com ! 3758 | Name Changes With much love and respect for you as a family member, and fellow geneology enthusiast. Michael Joseph Clark Is my great-great grandfather he is Buried in Clarkston, Utah His Headstone reads Michael Joseph Clark without the "E". He was buried by his loved ones who I am sure spelled his name the way that he spelled it through out his life. We cannot rewrite History or change the past, it is what it is. We cannot change the fact that Michael Joseph Clark spelled his last name without the "E" through out his life. Please feel free to spell your last name the way that you believe it should be spelled but for the sake of clarity in geneology and respect of Michael Joseph and his living and dying wish to be known as a Clark without the "E" and also out of respect for ALL of his descendents (which are many) his name should reflect how he personally spelled it through out his life. Thanks for your understanding and consideration. NAME: There is a discrepancy in the spe NAME: There is a discrepancy in the spelling of the CLARK surname. One line of the family spells it CLARKE. Check to see if and when the spelling changed. Which was the original? BAPTISM: On 3 Oct 1968, Michael Joseph Clark's baptism and temple ordinances were re-confirmed and ratified. Originally, Michael was taught the gospel and baptized by Erastus Snow and Parley P. Pratt. Michael Joseph Clark's parents originally came from Athboy, Ireland. He was born in Maine, but at the age of two the family moved to Providence, Rhodes Island. Also, at the age of two, Michael was sent back to Ireland for a time, under the care of ship's captain, because his father wanted his son to "stand on Irish soil." Perhaps there were grandparents there also. June 1862, Michael, his wife and son, immigrated to Utah with the LDS pioneers, traveling with Capt. Wooley's independent company. They settled first in Logan, Cache, Utah but in 1862 or 1863 they moved to Helena, Montana to work in the gold mines and then to Virginia City where they had a theatre. In 1874 they returned to Utah and settled in Clarkston, where they remained. See his life history at: http://users.deseretonline.com/archibalds/mj-clark.htm DEATH: There is a discrepancy on his death year. Symonds, gentleman v. Phillip Welch. For absolutely refusing to serve his master, Mr. Simonds, any longer, there being several years yet due, according to the purchase from the shipmaster who brought him over to sell.* Writs, dated, May 15, 1661, signed by Robert Lord, for the court, and served by Theophilus Wilson, constable of Ipswich. Samuel Symonds,* gent. Complaint to Salem court, June 25, 1661, against his two servants. Defence of William Downeing and Philip Welch: “We were brought out of or owne Country, contrary to our owne wills & minds, & sold here unto Mr Symonds, by ye master of the Ship, Mr Dill, but what Agreement was made betweene Mr Symonds & ye Said master, was neuer Acted by our Consent or knowledge, yet notwithstanding we haue indeauored to do him ye best seruice wee Could these seuen Compleat yeeres, which is 3 yeeres more then ye use to sell ym for at Barbadoes, wn they are stolen in England. And for our seruice, we haue noe Callings nor wages, but meat & Cloths. Now 7 yeares seruice being so much as ye practice of old England, & thought meet in this place, & wee being both aboue 21 years of age, We hope this honored Court & Jury will seriously Consider our Conditions.” The plaintiff’s plea: That he had about ten acres of Indian corn to be tended and had to hire divers workmen; that during all this court time, his two servants, being all the men he had, were not working, and consequently all his cattle, fence and family were left destitute; that the bargain made between George Dell, the shipmaster, and the plaintiff was still in force, etc. The jury reported a special verdict, that if Mr. Del’s covenant be according to law, then they find service due from defendants to plaintiff until May 10, 1663; if not, they find for defendants. Judgment for plaintiff, Mr. Dell’s deed legal, and said Downing and Welch to serve Mr. Symonds until 10:3:1663. Appealed to Court of Assistants. They promised to serve their master faithfully until the next court. Bill of sale, dated, May 10, 1654, from George Dell,* master of the ship Goodfellow, who “sould until Mr Samuell Symonds two of the Irish youths I brought over by order of the State of England: the name of one of them is william Dallton: the other is Edward welch, to serue him,” etc., for the space of nine years, in consideration of 26li. in merchantable corn or live cattle, before the end of the following October. And the said Samuell doth hereby accept of both the said youths as having good assurance.” Signed by George Dell.* Wit: Joseph S(we)tt,* Joseph — — — * and Georg Maning.* Kelecrist Ros deposed that upon a Sabbath day night before the last March court, he heard William Douney tell Mistress Symonds that he would get free if he could, when he had served seven years. Further, he heard William and Philip tell their master on the morning that the constable came for them, that if he would pay them for their time until Salem court, they would stay with him, but Symonds refused unless they would give security. When their master first brought them home, deponent asked William what Philip’s name was and he said it was Philip. Sworn, June 24, 1661, before Daniel Denison.* John King deposed that he “with divers others were stollen in Ireland, by some of ye English soldiers, in ye night out of theyr beds & brought to Mr Dills ship, where the boate lay ready to receaue them, & in the way as they went, some others they tooke with them against their Consents, & brought them aboard ye said ship, where there were divers others of their Country men, weeping and Crying, because they were stollen from theyr frends, they all declareing ye same & amongst ye rest were these two men, William Downeing & Philip Welch, and there they were kept, until upon a Lord’s day morning, ye Master sett saile, and left some of his water & vessells behind for hast, as I understood.” Sworn in court, 26:4:1661, before Hilliard Vern, * cleric. John Downing testified that William Downing and Phillip Welch, with several of their countrymen, were taken up and stolen by the ship master or some one whom he hired. The Ship-master, George Dill, was fain to go away and leave his water and much of his provisions behind for fear the country would have taken them from him. Sworn, June 24, 1661, before Daniel Denison.* John Downing further made oath that he knew that he and three or four others of his townsmen were taken up by force; that he did not know the two parties in question, but they said in the ship that they were stolen and brought by force. Naomy Hull, aged twenty years and upward, deposed that one night before her master Symonds’ servants, William and Philip, were arrested by the constable, they came into the parlor to prayer with the rest of the family, and Philip asked if Goodman Bragg’s son was coming to plow tomorrow. Her mistress said she thought so, that he said he would consider it. Philip then asked who would plow with him and her mistress said, hen said my mr, is it soe? What will you, play? Then both of them stood in it & expressed that it was soe, & that they had been with you (speaking to my master) longe enough. We have served you seaven yeares, we thinke that is longe enough; Then said my mr But we must not be our owne Judges; and said my mr you must worke for me still, unless you run away. Then said william, we scorne to run away. Then said Philip, we will goe away, & leave you before your faces. Alsoe they did both speak to this purpose; If you will free us, we will plant your corne, & mende your fences, & if you will pay us as other men, but we will not worke with you upon the same termes, or conditions as before. When my master had said come let us goe to prayer, Philip said you may go to prayer; we will speake more in the morning. And towards the end of ye discourse upon some occasion or question both answered & said it is soe, it is soe, they appearing resolute to leave my master as they had said. Lorenzo and his wife Persis learned about the restoration in 1832 when they had a chance to read the Book of Mormon. They were quickly converted, and moved to Kirtland. Lorenzo assisted in the building of the Temple, "having charge of the outside plastering, which was pronounced a fine piece of workmanship." He also served as a missionary. The family moved to Missouri, where he purchased 160 acres of land and built a log house. After working the land and bringing a good crop, he was driven from his home by the enemies of the Church, leaving almost everything behind. It was said he had "a thousand bushels of corn ready to harvest" which he left, along with his house, "three cows and a yoke of oxen; the latter being killed for beef to supply General Clark's mob militia." They escaped with only a light wagon and a team of horses, and a little bedding, and traveled to Nauvoo to start over. In Nauvoo, Lorenzo was ordained a Seventy and received his temple endowment. He also married a second wife, Harriet Wheeler, before again being forced to leave their home in the spring of 1846. The Youngs moved west with the Saints and were in Winter Quarters during the hard winter of 1846-47. When the first party was formed for the journey to the Great Salt Lake in spring 1847, Lorenzo was a part of the group, along with his wife Harriet (one of only three women included), his son Lorenzo, and his stepson Isaac Decker (the only two children in the first company). Lorenzo's first deed in the valley was to plant some potatoes that he had brought across the plains with him. The first year's crop was barely successful, getting such a late start, but he was able to save "a few small tubers for seed." Those were replanted the next year with better success, and Lorenzo was able to have the potatoes "dealt out in two-quart lots to some of his fellow settlers." His wife Harriet bore a child less than two months after their arrival in the valley, the first white male child to be born there- named Lorenzo Dow Young, like his father. The baby lived only a few months. Persis and the rest of the family joined them the next year. In 1849, Lorenzo and Harriet traveled east. In Missouri, they collected provisions: 500 sheep, 80 cattle, several horses. During the return trip, they had some difficulties with Indians: "Near one of the Pawnee Indian villages, a young man of the tribe rode in among the sheep, and with the utmost [boldness] speared one of the lambs and rode off with it. The Pioneer's blood was up in an instant. The Indian was pursued, shot at, and, as his fellows claimed, severely wounded in the leg by a young Irishman having charge of the sheep. As indemnity the savages demanded five beeves, which the owner refused, at the same time agreeing to give two beeves. The proffer was rejected and the Indians returned to their village. At sunrise next morning hundreds of Pawnees, armed and in war paint, rode into the camp, where their chief reiterated the demand for five beeves. Again 'Uncle Lorenzo' refused, reminding them that the young Indian was the aggressor and had deserved his fate; and while for peace sake he was willing to part with two of his cattle, he was not willing to be robbed and would not give more. The chief's eyes snapped angrily as this bold answer was interpreted to him, and he looked around significantly upon his assembled braves, who apparently where only awaiting the signal to help themselves to the sheep and cattle of the company. The sturdy pioneer also looked around; his wife and little stepson were sitting in the wagon, listening, and the teams were all ready to start. Taking up his rifle and a large pistol, both well loaded, he turned to the chief and said: 'I am prepared to defend myself and my property, and our men are likewise armed and ready. If you or any of your tribe attempt to molest us or stampede our stock, I'll kill you that instant.' He then gave the order to advance, and the train moved on, all the Indians following. A mile was traversed in silence, when suddenly the chief, turning to his band, uttered a peculiar yell, whereupon they all wheeled about and returned, leaving the intrepid company to pursue its way over the plains." Lorenzo returned to Utah and established a ranch on the west side of the Jordan River. In 1851, he was returning home when he was mistaken for a thief, and shot by guards at the ranch, "the ball severing the main artery and causing him to bleed profusely. With characteristic doggedness he rode on, but nearly bled to death before reaching the house of Daniel Daniels, a friend, about half a mile from the scene of the shooting. Says Mr. Young: 'Brother Daniels went for Brother Thomas Jeremy, close by, and they two laid hands on me, and asked the Lord to stop the flow of blood from my wounded arm. It stopped immediately. The main artery was cut above the elbow, and but for this timely relief I should have bled to death.'" That same year, he was ordained bishop of the 18th Ward in Salt Lake City, and served in that calling for 27 years until his health failed. He then served as a "home missionary": "For the following three years he traveled, preached and visited most of the stakes of Zion, administering to the sick and afflicted and encouraging the wealthy to aid and befriend the poor." He was ordained a patriarch by his brother, Brigham Young, in 1877 shortly before President Young passed away. "In this capacity he ministered much comfort and encouragement, especially to the poor, the sick and the sorrowful. He held this office during the remainder of his days." Lorenzo Dow Young passed away on November 21, 1895. Soon after, a third remarkable spiritual manifestation occurred to Lorenzo. He recorded that he had a dream in which he thought he had died and left his body. He was met by a "heavenly messenger, or guide" who was dressed in white. He remembered seeing his wife and sister weeping over his death, and wanted to comfort them but could not. Lorenzo recorded:] Space seemed annihilated. Apparently we went up, and almost instantly were in another world. It was of such magnitude that I formed no conception of its size. It was filled with innumerable hosts of beings, who seemed as naturally human as those among whom I had lived. With some I had been acquainted in the world I had just left. My guide informed me that those I saw had not yet arrived at their final abiding place. All kinds of people seemed mixed up promiscuously, as they are in this world. Their surroundings and manner indicated that they were in a state of expectation, and awaiting some event of considerable moment to them. As we went on from this place, my guide said, "I will now show you the condition of the damned." Pointing with his hand, he said, "Look!" I looked down a distance which appeared incomprehensible to me. I gazed on a vast region filled with multitudes of beings. I could see everything with the most minute distinctness. The multitude of people I saw were miserable in the extreme. "These," said my guide, "are they who have rejected the means of salvation, that were placed within their reach, and have brought upon themselves the condemnation you behold." The expression of the countenances of these sufferers was clear and distinct. They indicated extreme remorse, sorrow and dejection. They appeared conscious that none but themselves were to blame for their forlorn condition. This scene affected me much, and I could not refrain from weeping. Again my guide said, "Now let us go." In a moment we were at the gate of a beautiful city. A porter opened it and we passed in. The city was grand and beautiful beyond anything that I can describe. It was clothed in the purest light, brilliant but not glaring or unpleasant. The people, men and women, in their employments and surroundings, seemed contented and happy. I knew those I met without being told who they were. Jesus and the ancient apostles were there. I saw and spoke with the apostle Paul. My guide would not permit me to pause much by the way, but rather hurried me on through this place to another still higher but connected with it. It was still more beautiful and glorious than anything I had before seen. To me its extent and magnificence were incomprehensible. My guide pointed to a mansion which excelled everything else in perfection and beauty. It was clothed with fire and intense light. It appeared a fountain of light, throwing brilliant scintillations of glory all around it, and I could conceive of no limit to which these emanations extended. Said my guide, "That is where God resides." He permitted me to enter this glorious city but a short distance. Without speaking, he motioned that we would retrace our steps. We were soon in the adjoining city. There I met my mother, and a sister who died when six or seven years old. These I knew at sight without an introduction. After mingling with the pure and happy beings of this place a short time, my guide said again, "Let us go." We were soon through the gate by which we had entered the city. My guide then said, "Now we will return." I could distinctly see the world from which we had first come. It appeared to be a vast distance below us. To me, it looked cloudy, dreary and dark. I was filled with sad disappointment, I migh Information from family records and subm Information from family records and submitted by: Marie Y. Erickson Box 804 R.D. #1 Sandy, Ut. Biography of Lorenzo Dow Young By James Amasa Little Utah Historical Quarterly, 14:1–4 (1946), 26–132 [p.25] Lorenzo Dow Young was born October 19, 1807, in Smyrna, Chenango County, state of New York, the son of John Young and Nabby Howe Young.1 John Young was the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Tredway Young, and Joseph Young was the son of William and Hannah Young, who it is believed came from Europe and took up land in Hopkinton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. William's will was probated in May, 1647. In it he mentions a daughter Elizabeth, and his son Joseph, as his only son. On the maternal side the ancestry of Lorenzo D. Young has been traced back to Colonel Samuel Howe, of Sudbury, Massachusetts, who was born in October, 1642, a little over twenty years after the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock. Lorenzo in his infancy was a feeble child and his weakness continued into his boyhood. He remembers his mother as afflicted with consumption for many years, and as a praying, fervent woman. He says of her: "She frequently called me to her bedside and counseled me to be a good man that the Lord might bless my life. On one occasion she told me that if I would not neglect to pray to my Heavenly Father, he would send a guardian angel to protect me in the dangers to which I might be exposed." His pious, faithful friend and mother drooped and died on the 11th of June, 1814, when Lorenzo was only six years and seven months old. Soon after her death his father broke up house-keeping, and Lorenzo was sent about sixty miles to live with Mr. John P. Green, who had married his elder sister, Rhoda, and who resided near Cayuga Bridge, in Cayuga County, New York. It being a marshy, malarious country, Lorenzo was taken very sick with fever and ague and suffered severely. In the autumn of 1815 the family removed to Tyrone, Schuyler County. In the meantime Lorenzo's father had taken up land on [p.26] which to make a home about six miles east of an isolated settlement named Painted Post, between which place and Father Young's, John P. Green was the only settler. Between their houses was a dense forest in which wolves were very numerous. At one time several chased Lorenzo to the house of Mr. Green, and he seemed barely to escape with his life. During the winter of 1815 and 1816, Lorenzo's brothers, John, Joseph, Phineas, and Brigham were chopping timber and clearing land for their father, and as there were no female members of the family, Lorenzo was taken home to cook and assist in the house. In the autumn of 1816, when about nine years old, Lorenzo had a peculiar dream which he has told as follows: I thought I stood in an open space of ground and saw a good, well defined road leading, at an angle of forty-five degrees, into the air as far as I could see. I heard a noise similar to that of a carriage in rapid motion, at what seemed the upper end of the road. In a moment it came into sight, drawn by a pair of beautiful whi | Young, Lorenzo Dow Sr (I312684221670)

John Jett II died in 1771 and was survived by his wife, Ann. According to the Jett book, mentioned above, John Jett II died on his 400 acre farm at "Waterloo" which was located on the south side of the Rappahannock River where Virginia State Route 802 crosses the river. This is now Spring Road, Jeffersonton, Culpeper County, Virginia. It crosses out of Culpeper County over the Rappahannock River into Fauquier County at Fauquier White Sulphur Springs. Abstract of lease - 14 November 1749 - William Beverley of Blandfield, in Gloucester County, Virginia, leases to John Jett of Culpeper County, Virginia, to himself, his sons, Stephen and James, or the longest liver of them, 100 acres of land lying in "Elkwood", in Culpeper County. 3785 | not named not named Jane Pearson was a "commoner" who marri Jane Pearson was a "commoner" who married James hacking, the youngest son of an English Earl, and as such could be cut off with a Shilling by his mother after his father's death. His father died before he married Jane. His mother was opposed to his marriage, primarily because Jane was a commoner, and immediately after the wedding she cut him out of her will. Since the estate was entailed, it, with the title, went to his older brother William Hacking at his father' death. William was a doctor and unmarried and therefore without issue. He was drowned in the English Channel when his boat overturned while fishing. The town of Proud Preston, located in Lancashire County, England, belonged to the Hacking family, and he rentals amounted to L400 a year. After James Hacking died, Jane Pearson and the children moved to Manchester, where James, Jr., learned to run four looms in a cloth factory and Jane and Harriet each ran two looms until the family earned enough to come to the United States in 1848. The family landed in New Orleans. James Hacking Jr. and his family went to Massachusetts, where he and his girls worked in the cloth factories in Fall River and later lived in New Bedford. James served in the Union Army during the Civil War, The rest of the family continued on their journey to seek their fortunes in the West. They crossed the plains sometime between 1848 and 1850 by ox team to Salt Lake City, Utah, where, although they were not Mormons, they tarried for awhile. Daughter Harriett died while they were crossing the plains somewhere along the Platte River. Daughter Jane married a man named King in Salt Lake City, apparently in order to get a home. A child, David Franklin, was born to them on January 9, 1853. It is not known whether Mr. King died, or they divorced, but Jane then married a man named McNeil, who was a government scout. McNeil was shot in the back by Indians and died at Camp Floyd, which later became Fairfield, Utah. They had a daughter named Josephine , who died when she was about two years old. Jane Fisher then met and married James Hanley O'Brien at Camp Floyd, Utah. They had two children, Mary and James Jr. James Sr. died in Wshington, D.C., of wounds received during the Civil War. She returned to Cedar Valley, Utah, where her mother, Jane Pearson, and brother John had settled. Jane Pearson Hacking Fisher was the nurse and mid-wife for Cedar Valley. Whenever anyone was ill or a baby born, she was always in attendance. 1) James/Hacking 27 Jan 1827, 3) Joel/Te 1) James/Hacking 27 Jan 1827, 3) Joel/Terry sld. 20 Oct 1898 SL to 1) !NOTE: The Church of Jesus Christ of Lat !NOTE: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Ancestral File (TM); ; July 1996 (c), data as of 2 January 1996; ; , Family History Library, 35 N West Temple Street, Salt Lake City, UT 84150 USA | Pearson, Jane (I312684224298)

"Boston’s first almshouse was in operation by the mid-1660s. In 1682, it was destroyed by fire, and was replaced in 1696 at the corner of Beacon and Park streets. In 1723 a prison (Bridwell) was added to the site as well as a separate workhouse in 1739. The Workhouse was designed for the poor who had the ability to work. Any profits earned from the labor of the residents were expected to cover the overhead of maintaining the Workhouse and, hopefully, the Almshouse. In 1795, the Almshouse, the Bridewell prison, and the workhouse property were sold" for redevelopment. This source is considered the definitive bio of Richard Brownson, according to the Society of the Descendants of the Founders of Hartford. According to Timothy Lester Jacobs, Genealogist with The Society (from the Society web site as of Jan 2020): "There are several genealogies dealing with Richard Bronson, none of which can be recommended due to numerous confusions between the children of Richard and his brother John, and the maintenance of a myth that the three Bronsons of Hartford were children of a Richard Bronson. The only definitive work on the Bronsons is that of John I. Coddington in “The American Genealogist” Vol. 38 article “The Brownson, Bronson, or Brunson Family of Earl’s Colne, Essex, England, - Connecticut, and South Carolina”. This extraordinary work, which was intended to be continued, ceased after 1963’s Volume 39.
