Parker, 1994 A few years before his death, Swann lost one of his older sons, Samuel, Jr., who was drowned in Roanoke Inlet in 1702. Although he was only twenty-one, Samuel, Jr., was a justice of Perquimans Precinct Court when he died. He left a wife, Mary, who was a daughter of Alexander Lillington and a sister of Elizabeth, the wife of Swann, Sr. Surviving records indicate, but do not explicitly state, that Mary later married Jeremiah Vail and was the mother of Jeremiah, Jr., John, Moseley, and Mary. Records also indicate, but not conclusively, that the Samuel Swann of Perquimans who died in 1753 was the son of Samuel, Jr., and his wife Mary. Some writers have erroneously identified him as the son of Swann, Sr., apparently being unaware of the death of Samuel, Jr. | Lillington, Mary (I312684223598)

3705 | Mary, the wife of Thomas Barnes, was hung Mary, the wife of Thomas Barnes, was hung as a witch in 1662 at Hartford, Conn. We have never been able to learn anything about her parents or where she was born. There is only the record of her children and her execution. Evidently everything about her was wiped out of the records because of the sentence of being a witch. Some day we will know who Mary was, and we will love her just that much more. 3708 | Marytje vs. Maria Very confusing, but unfortunately, true. There are two daughters with similar names in this family. They each have sources verifying their separate existence, they each married different spouses and had large families. Take care in merging, as they are not the same person. Later the farm was called the "OLD BUCK FARM". It was located one mile south of the meeting house. It was a quite a large tract of land , and no doubt he superintended its cultivation; but apart from this, nothing can be found to show his having any other occupation, except from the following extract from the N.E. Historic Genealogical Register, Vol . 29, p. 72: "William Brush and Elizabeth Gold, widow, both of Woburn, published according to law, as testified by Ephraim Buck, Constable 3." From Sewall's History of Woburn and Frothingham's History of Charlestown we learn: "Ephraim Buck was taxed in the Meeting House Rates (Church Pew Rent) in 1672." "He was married 1-1-1671, to Sarah, daughter of John and Eunice Monsall Brooks, and grandaughter of Deacon John Monsall." In 1692 Ephraim was elected constable of Charlestown, where the town records show he solemnized marriages. There is less in his life of a conspicuous nature to record than of his brothers who lived to the same age, his walk having been in quieter and more unobtrusive channels. He was born at Windsor, February 6, 1675, and died in May 1716, at the age of forty-one years, less than two years after his father's decease. Of his earlier childhood there are found no memoranda. Captain Higley had imbedded an ambition in this boy before he was thirteen, as he did in all of his older sons, for the possession of lands, by securing for him by grant of the town in his own name two lots of land, the whole containing twenty-five acres, situated on the east side of the river. He was honored by the town meeting with sundry local appointments in the town and neighborhood while yet a young man, and served in matters concerning the Church. ... On the 4th of December, 1701, Jonathan Higley married Ann Barher, the daughter of Lieutenant Thomas Barber. Lieutenant Barber was at that time in command under Captain John Higley of the Simsbury militia. The family of Barbers were, if not the leaders, among the most prominent citizens, and founders of the town. Jonathan and Ann settled upon their home farm at the "N. E. Corner," afterwards called Turkey Hills. An unusual fatality appears to have overtaken their children. The successive births and deaths of four infants occurred. Except one, a daughter, none lived beyond babyhood. This daughter, who was named Me'rcy--a family name among the Barbers--was born November 12, 1712, and baptized on the i3th of the following June. At the age of twenty the town meeting ordered lands "laid out" to her. She afterward married John Coult and resided at Harwinton, Conn., and became the mother of a family; her eldest son, born October 13, 1735, bearing his grandfather's name--Jonathan Higley Coult. Jonathan Higley's name frequently appears upon the Land Records, in the purchase and sale of lands, and in this connection it may be remarked that repeated transactions in business, as well as social relations between his brothers and himself, indicate a beautiful harmony and kindly family feeling existing between them, which commands hearty admiration. In the sharp divergence and bitter contest between the proprietors of the town and the townspeople over the Copper-Hill lands, he represented the family in the peole's meetings. As has been previously stated the Higleys were careful that some one of their number should be present at all public discussions where measures concerning these lands were likely to be taken. He died in May, 1716. Jonathan Higley's will was dated April 9, 1716, one month before his death. The main bequests were to his "beloved wife Ann," and to his "only daughter Mercy." He gave legacies in land to his "six brothers," and divides'his Windsor property between his "three eldest brothers, John,Brewster, and Samuel," and remembered in his bequests David, the second son of Brewster, who was then but a lad. ... Ann Higley survived her husband but six years, and died November 15, 1722, leaving their only child an orphan ten years of age. The child became heir to all of the property that belonged to both of her parents. ... BIRTH: 1. Samuel Parsons, comp., "Recor BIRTH: 1. For this service, he was paid £ 2:7:0. Other public service included the charge of "Benj. Haywood's garrison" in West Regiment of Middlesex (1691/2), The first official mention that I have The first official mention that I have found of Ephraim as an adult is in Chelmsford where, in 1673 he was named Viewer of Fences. He must have shortly thereafter moved to Stow MA where, in 1675 he is recorded as a private under Major Willard in a "troop of horse rushing from Lancaster 30 miles through woods and swamps to Brookfield, Mass., rescuing there the inhabitants found huddled in the one surviving house - a fortified one - all the other houses having been burned by the Indians" (Hildreths in America). For this service, he was paid £ 2:7:0. He was allotted land in Stow in 1678. The Stow Records call him an "ancient planter" and he married both of his wives there; apparently running an inn. In 1687 he moved back to Chelmsford to help his father and was deeded the Chelmsford land mentioned in the information above. He served as Surveyor of Highways in Chelmsford in 1688 and 1690; other public service included the charge of "Benj. Haywood's garrison" in West Regiment of Middlesex (1691/2), 1693 Tythingman, and Selectman in 1694 - 99, 1701, 1703, 1706, 1709 -11, 1719, 1721 - 22. He served on various juries during his life and on 17 Jul 1695 was named guardian of the 14 year old son of his brother Lieutenant James Hildreth. In 1705 - 7 he served as Chairman of Town Committee for laying out roads and is listed on several tax lists and petitions. Ephraim and Anna began to convey land to their "dutiful" children, starting in 1724 (to sons James, Joseph, Ebenezer - 11 Aug 1724; to "well beloved sons" Jonathan and Jacob, both of Chelmsford - 23 May 1729). He made his will 5 Mar 1730 and it was probated 12 Apr 1731 naming Wife Anna, Dau. Anna Butterfield, Sons Joseph (oldest), Ebenezer, James, David (ae 20), Jonathan and Jacob. Anna MOORE HILDRETH survived her husband by almost 30 years and died at age 95 apparently in Littleton Mass where her funeral was held in 1760. In 1735, son Jonathan together with Nathaniel RUSSELL of Littleton (probably the husband of her daug hter, Anna) posted a £ 250 bond for her support. 3743 | Mrs. Catherine Ann Smith Newkirk (1823-1875) vs. Mrs. Catherine Miller Settle-Newkirk (1831-1899) Catherine deceased 1875 is linked here (141845812, FAG) as married 1878 to Asa Newkirk (141845739). Because she deceased 1875 and married 1878, her records appear to be conflated at Find-A-Grave. The gravestones of Catherine and Asa Newkirk are indeed of similar style and original, respective of their 1875 and 1887 deaths. Catherine's 1875 burial citation: (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/141845812/catherine_a-newkirk: accessed April 14, 2024), memorial page for Catherine A Settle Newkirk (5 Nov 1823–6 Apr 1875), Find a Grave Memorial ID 141845812, citing Newkirk Family Cemetery, Mount Washington, Bullitt County, Kentucky, USA; Maintained by Larry Hutchison (contributor 47217393). Asa Newkirk's 1887 burial citation: (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/141845739/asa-newkirk: accessed April 14, 2024), memorial page for Asa Newkirk (7 May 1812–9 Feb 1887), Find a Grave Memorial ID 141845739, citing Newkirk Family Cemetery, Mount Washington, Bullitt County, Kentucky, USA; Maintained by Larry Hutchison (contributor 47217393). Source records of Asa (1812-1887) appear to be curated at https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/LZ5S-VZC His 24 Sept. 1878 marriage at Bullitt Co., KY is this source: https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/sources/LZ5S-VZC Mrs. Catherine Miller Settle-Newkirk (1831-1899) and her records are curated at https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/LZ5S-VQJ There are other Catherine's but the one deceased 1875 apparently married in 27 October 1859 with Asa Newkirk and they were promptly enumerated during the 30 Aug. 1860 census at Mt. Washington, Bullitt Co., KY: 1859 marriage: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FW5Z-B6F 1860 census: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MZ1S-84Z Mrs. Catherine Ann Smith Newkirk (1823-1875) and her records are curated at https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/K8FT-8S5 The records at FamilySearch.org are relatively organized and logical. Perhaps whoever setup the 1878 relationship can publicly focus on the record set to further study and clarify what appears to have been conflated Catherines/Kates at Find-A-Grave. | Miller, Catherine (I312684220737)
