early church member
Direct ancestor of Arlan Wilson, member of Yakima 4th Ward.

BIRTH: Vital Records of Petersham, Mass, pg. 57 indicates a twin.

Joined the church in 1836 in Kirtland, OH. His son George Deliverance Wilson was first of the Wilsons to join the church, baptized in 1834 in Kirtland, OH. (see "Bradley Wilson History" in WILSON file)

Joseph E. Wilson gives "Kirtland, 23 May 1836" as the place and date of baptism. !MARRIAGE: Edmund Wait states that he believes that Deliverance Wilson, Jr. and Lovina Fairchild were married in Georgia, Vermont, about 1793. From copy of unfinished letter by Edmund Wait (husband of Hannah Wilson, youngest daughter) to "H.O. Smith, Esq." The first is in the files of Randon Wilson, Salt Lake City; the second can be found in the microfilms, Film No. 1275426, Family History Center, Salt Lake City, Utah. !ORDINANCES: Baptism: (1) Archive sheet prepared by Vera Price of Idaho Falls, Idaho. A baptismal date of 29 Sep 1924 and an endowment date of 29 Oct 1924 are also given on our fgsheets. -L. Wilson (These later ordinances need to be documented.) Sealing to Spouse: Stamped fgsheet submitted by Vera Price, original in the possession of Randon Wilson, Salt Lake City, Utah. Also Ancestral File, printout of 20 NOV 1990. -L. Wilson Sealing of Children to Parents: Except as noted, all children of Joseph Wilson and Rebecca Phelps were sealed to their parents on 19 Sep 1944. Documentation: Stamped fgsheet submitted by Vera Price, original in the possession of Randon Wilson of Salt Lake City. !DEATH: Joseph E. Wilson gives date of death as "1838" and place of death as: "on journey to Missouri, in Ohio." Edmund Wait, husband of Hannah Wilson (a daughter of Deliverance Wilson, Jr. and Lovina Fairchild), in an unfinished letter to H. O. Smith, Esq. (family genealogist) gives the date of death as "About August, 1838" and the place of death as Charleston, Coles Co., Ill. This latter place of death has some merit in that a son, Wellington Paul Wilson, with his wife, Elizabeth Boardman Smith, was residing in Charleston, Coles Co., Ill. at the time. Wellington Paul Wilson, as quoted by Eunice Cope (a granddaughter) confirms Illinois as being the place of death without giving any further details.

Wilson spelling variations
When researching this line I was confused that sometimes the surname is spelled as Willson. This surprised me because I had never been told of that.
I think I finally figured it out. In the 1790 census for Springfield VT, on pg 294 we see Deliverance Wilson listed. It is a very fuzzy copy. On first glance it looks like Willson, but in reality it is Wilson. The "s" is written like an f with a backwards lower loop. That is how Germanic people used to write their "s". I think the clerk who wrote this line was of Germanic descent and thus the error crept into the family history.

John was said to be the strongest man in New England in his day. Tradition says he was visited in East Windsor by a celebrated athelete, who had come all the way from Virginia to test their relative strength. Osborn was disinclined to the trial, but, finding the Virginian persistent, finally accepted and adroitly remarking that a drink of cider would be refreshing before engaging in such a contest, led the way to a cider-press on his farm. Raising one of the filled barrels to his lips with astounding ease, he wished good health to his visitor, took a good long draught from its' bung, and politely handed it to the Virginian. The latter, amazed, replied that he would never drink with the devil, for no man could, of his own unaided strength, do what Osborn had done, and returned home without the combat he had so greatly desired. autobiography
#2 (Alva Benson, written by himself at the age of 80)
"I am now in my 80th year, writing these words without glasses. I was born Dec. 13, 1799 in Onondaga County New York, town of Disites. [place variant from Onondaga County Gazeeter: Disitis, Onondago, NY., or Otisco,Onondago Co, NY.] I was the son of Benjamon Benson and Kesiah Messenger. When I was 17 years old my father moved to the state of Indiana, Clarks County. I married Cynthia Vail, the daughter of Gamaliel Vail and Lucy Manning Vail, in Clarks Co. Indiana. I moved to Jackson County Rockville in the year 1821 (Indiana) with my father's family. We built a sawmill off white river for a man by the name of Fishly. We next moved to Hendricks Co. Ind. thirty miles north where I bought 140 acres of land. In the year 1832 I joined the Mormon Church. I was baptised on Feb. 14, 1832, by Samuel Dwelling [Lewellin] and I was confirmed by Uriah Curtis, to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I was ordained a Priest by John Lawles [Lewis], May 6, 1832. My wife Cynthia and my father and mother and all his family were baptised during the winter of 1832. We sold our land. My father and brother Jerome moved to Jackson County Missouri. We got there on the 17th of Nov. I built a house on Public Lands and lived there one year. Was driven out of that County by a mob because we were Mormon, and not of their faith. My father with his family and seven other families moved to Layfayette County. We stopped on Pigon Bare Creek. We stayed there 2 winters and built a saw mill and a grist mill for John MacGlothen. We then moved to Clay County where the main body of the Church was. I repaired a grist mill and then rented it. In 1836 we moved to Pite Co. Birch Creek. I built another sawmill for a Mr. Levenworth. I then rented it and sawed lumber for the Forte, then I moved to Caldwell County in 1838, Farwest and that same year the Missouri mob was in a raid against us. The Church of Christ, and orders were given to extinguish the Church or be driven from the State. They made us give over all our State and personal Property and in November the mob marshalled us and took our arms from us and ordered us to commence same day. The weather would not permit us to commence moving out of the State. There was a man by the name of David Dalcame who hired me to build a 40 foot treadwheel that winter in Clay County. There was another man by the name of Cash who hired me to build a sawmill for him in the spring. He furnished me a home to live in and protection and so I did. In Sept 1839 I started for Illinois Macdaine Co Clarkswell where my wife's brother lived and I stayed for over five years and built and repaired sawmills. In May 1846 I started with my family and two other families, the widow Vail and Martha Vail and her four children, my sister Polly Bartholmu and her husband Joseph, to go with the Church of Jesus Christ to the West. When we got to Iowa, Potywome County, we stopped there for five years. I had a small farm and worked down in Missouri at a millsite where we made a fitout for a journey to the Rocky mountains. We started in the year 1852 in company with wagons we crossed the Missouri River the 4th of July 1852. We traveled for 3 months and reached the valley of the Great Salt Lake in 1852. We settled in Springville and lived there one year and was called to go to Iron County, Utah for the purpose of strengthening that village against the Indians. In the spring of 1859 we moved back to Springville and lived one summer and wintered in Ogden. In the spring of 1860 we moved to Cache Valley on the first day of April 1860. We met the Apostle Ezra Taft Benson at the point of the mountain. We asked him what the priveleges were in the valley and he said "Find the best place you can." On the 3rd of April we camped near Wellsville on the creek, stayed there about a week and looked over the north part of the valley and looked over the south end of the valley and found where we could take a water ditch out that would water a great scope of farming land. The ditch would be 9 miles long, and at this time there were about 12 or 15 families gathered and we struck out for the place now called Hyrum, surveying then our little farms of 20 acres.

#3 p. 17 Quoting Moroni's diary: "During my childhood days the Saints were passing through their trials at Missouri. Many times my mother took me in her arms and hid in the brush to escape the mobs. We lived in Lafayette Co, Clay Co, and Caldwell Co, after being driven from Jackson Co. While living in Clay Co, my father built a saw mill and sawed all the lumber for the first fort built by the government at Leavenworth, Kansas. In 1839 all the Saints were called to settle in Caldwell Co (Farwest) so they could all be together as a protection against the mobs. In answer to this call a large company of us were traveling together. When we arrived at Haun's Mill, part of the Company stopped for the night while the rest of us went on to Farwest. The next morning a terrible massacre took place and we would have been in it had we stayed at the mill. When the Saints were driven from Missouri and settled in Nauvoo, we went to Sparksville, McClain Co., Ill., where my mother's brother lived. He was well to do and gave us help which we greatly needed, after being robbed of so much. We lived here seven years and here I was baptized into the church in 1841 by David Judy. I can remember seeing Joseph and Hyrum Smith, when I was a small boy playing marbles on the public square at Farwest. I saw Joseph Smith when he was arrested and taken to Liberty Jail. When the people were driven out of Nauvoo we went with them and settled in Council Bluffs. During the winter of 1846 and 1847, when I was just past 13 years of age, I pounded all the corn we had for hominy and cornbread on a hominy block, and I had to carry all the wood we burned about a mile and a half on my back, through the deep snow, with shoes on that had holes in them bigger than the remaining pieces of leather. I also had to chop down elms for the cattle to brouse on to keep them from starving to death. During the summer I did the farming because I was the oldest one home, all the rest being off working. After living at Council Bluffs five years we came to Utah, arriving in Springville Sept 23, 1852, and went from there to Payson to live during the winter and the following summer. In the summer of 1853 the Walker Indian war broke out and I was mustered into service Jul 19, 1853 and served over three months as a guard. That fall we were called to settle in Iron county by Brigham Young. We left Payson Nov 11, 1853 and when we reached Iron county we settled on the site of Cedar City and built a fort a half mile square for protection against the Indians. I was shot in the leg with an arrow, while standing guard one night outside the fort. I went back to Springville in 1858 and farmed the following summer. In the spring of 1860 I with others came to Cache Valley and after exploring the entire valley we selected the site of Hyrum to locate on. That summer I helped build the canal that waters the city and all the land southeast of town. (see pg. 32 for his experience with the railroad between SL and Ogdon)

#4 Alva Benson, 3rd child of our forefather, Benjamin Benson and Kesiah Messinger. 12 children blessed their home (11 of whom lived to maturity). These parents held their children close to them as they traveled about the great frontier of America. And when age slowed up the parents, the children in turn, cared for them as they followed their parents' example, pioneering from place to place & always pushing westward. Family lived in Onondaga county until Alva was about 12 years of age. The first settlers were there 6 years before Alva's birth. Civilization was coming to this wilderness. The first sawmill was erected in 1793 and the first gristmill in 1794. During these early years, the settlers learned many basics of pioneer life. The axe was the pioneer's most important tool; a man could walk into the forest with nothing but his axe, yet fashion snares to catch game, fell trees, and fit them into a cabin. He could even clear brush for growing a garden and by holding an axe blade in his palm, he could use the sharp blade in the manner of a knife and whittle with it. It was probably in the spring of 1812 when Alva was 12 that his father moved his family to Bath, Stueben county, New York, a most pleasant village in the western part of the state on the banks of the Cochocton River. During the 7 years that Alva spent growing up in Bath, he most likely became very good with the axe and helped his father build mills The Benson family learned to work hard to produce the food that kept then well and strong. Work was not the only thing the Benson children did; they were a strong religious people and attended church. When Alfred was born in 1817 there were 10 children in the Benson family. About 1818 the Benson family left their home and small farm in Steuben county, New York and traveled westward through the flat lands of Pennsylvania, across the state of Ohio and into the central part of Indiania to settle in Clark county, where the last child was born in 1819. It was here that Alva found the girl who became his wife, Cynthia Vail, granddaughter of Lt. Thomas Vail, who served in the French and Indian war and the Revoluntionary war. When not in active duty he too pioneered in the forests of Vermont and cleared land of both trees and rocks. Cynthia was born to Gamaliel Vail and Lucy Manning on 28 Feb 1801 in Palmer, New York. Like Alva, Cynthia also knew the rigor of pioneer life since her father, Gamaliel, a physician, travelled from place to place in Indiana, Kentucky and Illinois, doctoring the people of this frontier country. Cynthia was nineteen when she married Alva Benson on 11 Aug 1820 at Charleston, Clark county,

Accidental middle name of Moorhead shows on a marriage record.
Note: It is on this record where it lists that Lovina Wilson Brown was married to John Moorhead Brown. This is not accurate and likely was a transcription error. Lovina was married to John Martin Brown (K2W3-X6D). James Moorhead Brown (KWJY-XZ4), is John Martin Brown's brother, hence the confusion.

This confirms Lovina's parents and her birth/baptism/sealing dates.

John Martin Brown
&ltb&gtJohn Martin Brown
&lt/b&gt
The following was taken from www.orsonprattbrown.com on 7/5/2006 by Maxine Rasmussen and is an edited version of his life story:

Written by his granddaughters,. Gladys Brown White and Delpha Brown Culley
from the biograpy written by Hattie Jensen prior to 1948
Researched and updated by Erold Clark Wiscombe

&ltb&gtBIOGRAPHY OF JOHN MARTIN BROWN I&lt/b&gt John Martin Brown the eldest son of Captain James Brown Jr. and Martha Stephens, was born June 29, 1824 in Rowan County, North Carolina. There were eight sons and one daughter in the family. He lived at this place, working on his father's farm and helping to make hemp rope, until he was nine years of age. In 1833 the family came to Brown County, Illinois, a thousand mile journey, which was made with horses and wagons. His father being a school teacher it was under his teachings that John learned the rudiments of reading and writing.

After living in Brown County two years, the family moved to Adams County, Ill., where his father entered into farming on a large scale. This new country and the land had to be cleared of timber before it could be cultivated. This was accomplished by girdling the trees so they would die, then cutting them down and putting them in piles then burning them. After this land was cultivated and crops were grown the produce was shipped to Quincy, Ill. on the Mississippi River. Wild meat, such as deer, wild turkey, partridge, possum, coon, quail and wild hogs were plentiful. Therefore, it was from this supply that they were able to obtain fresh meat for summer and dried meat for their winter use. In this part of the country were salt licks, left from the receding of an ancient sea, and it was here that the deer would go to drink and get salt and this made it convenient for the hunters.

They also made bird traps from small poles to catch wild turkey. They would leave a string of corn leading to the trap and the turkey would eat the corn finally falling into the trap. After the land was cultivated and they had raised sufficient corn to feed hogs they raised domesticated ones, but it was necessary to keep them penned to keep the wild hogs from killing them. It was also necessary to watch the pens at night and keep fire brands burning to keep away prairie wolves. At times they drove large turtles into brush fires and roasted them. At one time they caught one and raised it in the swill barrel.

During the summer the hogs were turned out in the forest and fed on nuts in the weeds, which consisted mostly of oak and hazel brush. In the evening they fed them corn. At feeding time they managed to get them home by calling in a loud voice "pig-ooh" and soon they would hear the pigs grunt and here they would come running for their corn.

Their home was a log cabin, such as Daniel Boone lived in. On their farm they raised corn, sweet potatoes, pumpkins and beans. They were very glad when they were able to raise these luxuries, as they got tired of living on wild meat. It was necessary to travel ten to fifteen miles on horse back with saddle bags over a rough crooked road in order to get the corn to the mill to have it ground into corn meal. This would take one or two days, as the only mills available were hand mills. The miller received his pay by taking his toll of corn.

His mother always milked the cow and when she was confined to bed with a new baby the lot fell to John M. now a boy of fourteen or fifteen years of age. He put on his mother's dress and sunbonnet, thinking he would fool the cow, but when she saw him she ran away. One event he remembered well was the death of his mother. They lived in a log cabin which had a loft of plank floor where dried fruit was kept. His mother died of childbirth and he said at the time he heard beautiful singing, which seemed to come from the loft. This was in Sept. 28, 1840.

In the spring of 1836, after the Mormons had been expelled from Missouri and had begun to settle in Illinois, his parents heard the gospel preached and soon there after were converted and all the family was baptized in 1838. In January 1841, his father married Susan Foutz, the daughter of &ltb&gtJacob Foutz,&lt/b&gt the man who had first preached the gospel to him. And in the year John Martin Brown I, now at the age of 17, married (1) &ltb&gtNancy&lt/b&gt &ltb&gtAnn Foutz&lt/b&gt, a sister to his new stepmother.

In the year 1842 his father and family moved to Nauvoo to be with the Saints and they lived there about four years, suffering the trials and hardships along with the Saints at the hands of the mob and were driven from their homes in 1846. He said the Saints held their meetings in a grove at Nauvoo during the summer at one time, just before a meeting, the Prophet rode up on a beautiful horse,&ltb&gt Joe Duncan&lt/b&gt, and handed the reins to John M. to hold for him. He always considered this a great honor.

He remembered well the martyrdom of the Prophet &ltb&gtJoseph Smith&lt/b&gt and his brother &ltb&gtHyrum Smith&lt/b&gt. He was an eye witness to the transfiguration of &ltb&gtBrigham Young&lt/b&gt at the time he was chosen to be President of the Church.

In the year of 1849, &ltb&gtJohn Bell&lt/b&gt, who had made up a party to go to the gold fields in California persuaded some of the young men to join them. John joined the party, leaving his wife and two young sons in the care of her father, Jacob Foutz. The party went by way of the Oregon Trail through Soda Springs, Idaho. He remained in California digging for gold until the spring of 1853. He had gone to San Bernardino and he had about $1700.00 in gold. [ In the meantime, &ltb&gtNancy&lt/b&gt &ltb&gtAnn Foutz Brown &lt/b&gtand their two sons traveled to Utah in the Jacob Foutz Company.]

While in San Bernardino, about April 15, 1853 he learned that a man named Lamper was going to start with the mail for Salt Lake City and had only four men with him. As that was too small a number to be safe and he would like to have three or four more. He told John M. if he would raise two or three more other men he would wait at the Gajon Pass for them. As he had never had any experience with pack animals he told his cousin, James Stephens Brown, who had recently returned from a [four] year mission to the Society Islands and who was in San Bernardino waiting for an opportunity to go to Utah, that if he would go with him and help with the stock and packs, he would furnish everything needed en route. James S. had had considerable experience in handling wild horses and mules. So they made ready and were off on April 17, 1853.

They met the party at the place agreed upon. Some of the horses were quite wild. They had 19 head of animals and traveled at the rate of fifty miles a day for the first half of the journey, as their route led them thru hostile Indian country.

All went well until the last day before they came to the Muddy. Then they saw danger signs of Indians. If ever you travel in Indian country and come to fresh Indian tracks, yet do not see an Indian, then you may be sure that some red man wants a few horses and some plunder, if he does not want a scalp or two to hang on his bridle bit. The Indians had rolled large boulders into narrow passes in the road. This meant danger, so they examined everything, made sure there was powder in every tube and ammunition handy and every man prepared to act promptly in case of an attack.

They were crossing between Las Vegas and the Muddy. The distance was about 65 miles without water so they had to keep going and they arrived at the Muddy River about 4:00 A.M. They watered their stock and got a hasty meal and had a very short rest. At daylight they began to saddle up for another start. Just at that moment a large, stout Indian raised up out of the willows close by. He had his bow and arrows in hand. John M. leveled his gun on the Indian when James S. seized it and forbade anyone to shoot. At that moment the Indian came forward, held out his hand as if to shake hands. Most of the party was ready and anxious to open fire on the Indian but James S. stopped them and told them if one shot was fired everyone of them would be killed.

The Indian told James S. that he wanted to be friendly. The party then mounted and started on their way. At that time 25 or 30 Indians, all well armed, raised up out of the brush. Then most of the party drew their guns when James S. told them not to shoot as the Indians were friendly and they merely wanted to beg some food. As the party trotted up James S. fell back with the Indians, who talked and he began to understand them. The Indians told him when the sun got to such a position which would be about 9:00 A.M. they would come to a large camp of Mormons and non-mormons, with their families. They had horses, mules, cows, wagons and some sheep and goats. There were also a lot of Mexicans camped with them.

The men were still slow to believe and some of them cursed the Indians, saying if the black rascals are friendly why did they not go back. The Indians convinced them that what they said was true. Just then a Mexican came running towards them and when he said that what the Indians said was true, John M. then said he believed that James S. could understand the Indians, as he understood the Spanish language and the Spaniard had told him just what the Indian had said.

Soon they came to a rise, from which they could see the camps just as the Indian had described them. The Indians had followed and pointed to everything they had spoken of, saying, "We do not lie". They laid over at the camp one day and rested themselves and stock then proceeded to the Rio Virgin, then up that river and across another plateau to Beaver Dam. From here they traveled over the high rolling country for forty miles to Santa Clara, Utah. When they got half way across they saw a smoke signal, perhaps on the Santa Clara or a little above. As James S. had had more acquaintance with the Indians than any other of the party he told them

This source is considered the definitive bio of Richard Brownson, according to the Society of the Descendants of the Founders of Hartford. According to Timothy Lester Jacobs, Genealogist with The Society (from the Society web site as of Jan 2020): "There are several genealogies dealing with Richard Bronson, none of which can be recommended due to numerous confusions between the children of Richard and his brother John, and the maintenance of a myth that the three Bronsons of Hartford were children of a Richard Bronson. The only definitive work on the Bronsons is that of John I. Coddington in “The American Genealogist” Vol. 38 article “The Brownson, Bronson, or Brunson Family of Earl’s Colne, Essex, England, - Connecticut, and South Carolina”. This extraordinary work, which was intended to be continued, ceased after 1963’s Volume 39. In 1987 he had deposited his papers at the New England Historic Genealogical Society in Boston." https://www.foundersofhartford.org/the-founders/richard-bronson/
