JOHN, son of Lieut. Israel Horton and Sarah Lee, born in Goshen, 30July, 1763. He married in Little Britain, Orange Co., N. Y., 9 April,1785, DEBORAH TERRY, daughter of Parshall Terry and Deborah Clark, bornin Little Britain, Orange Co., N. Y., on the 25 day of May, 1766. She wasone of the inmates of the famed Forty Fort the night after the Indianbattle and massacre of Wyoming. She was the tender and affectionatemother of eleven children, and raised them all to maturity. They moved toWyoming Valley in 1787, and in 1792 moved to Terrytown, Pa., where hebought land and settled permanently, and where he died on the 28th day ofApril, 1848, aged almost 85 years, and where she died on the 25th day ofMay, 1844, aged 78 years. Major Horton built the first framed dwelling-house on the west side ofthe river in the township of then Wyalusing, now Terry. He was the ownerof the first two-horse wagon ever brought into Terrytown, and that wagonnot only cheerfully bore the burdens he put upon it, but also those ofseveral of the neighbors. He also owned the first fanning mill everbrought into the place. He built the first frame barn that was ever builtin the township. It was built in 1805, and is still in a good state ofpreservation, and is owned by Edmund Horton. The framed house mentioned above, built by Major Horton in 1806,accidentally took fire on the 23 Sept., 1861, and was burned up. MajorHorton was a wagoner in the Revolutionary War, towards the close of thewar, and was stationed in Mamakating Hollow, and afterwards on theNeversink Creek, not far from the present Port Jervis. He was Major of abattalion of militia in Wyalusing, frequently held township offices, andwas one of the leading men of the place. He was not a public professor ofChristianity, but his life in the ma in was in harmony with its teachings, and he loved, and was successful, in promoting good order in society. Hewas universally esteemed, and at his funeral a larger concourse of peoplewere gathered than had ever before been witnessed in this part of thecountry on a funeral occasion. Deborah, his wife, was a womandistinguished for her eminent piety, unwearied industry, and goodeconomy; she knew well how to guide the house. Their children were allborn at Terrytown, except Ebenezer, who was born in Little Britain, N.Y., and Anna and Lydia, who were born in Wyoming Valley. 337 | 1817 1817 dead dead Manlius was an important stop on the early road Manlius Village was an important business point before the building of the Erie Canal, as the transportation of merchandise and other goods to and from the east and west, and the travel both ways centered here by the meeting of the Seneca and Cherry Valley turnpikes. This transportation and travel was at one time so immense that almost every other house along the road was a tavern. There were then six or seven large publiƶ houses between this village and Chittenango. Manlius Village was for more than twenty years the center of a large trade from the surrounding country, and was a driving business place when Syracuse was a dreary swamp. There were a dozen or more stores in the place in 1815. | Wentworth, John (I312684221249)
