2865 | came to America with brother Jeremiah wh came to America with brother Jeremiah who died en route Grave His grave was washed out to sea. Know ye That the First accounts we have Know ye That the First accounts we have of the Family ofLeamings are that Christopher and Jeremiah Leamyeng werebrothers and Englishmen but who were their progenitors, whatcircumstances they were in or what part of England theyinhabited are incidents that have not been transmitted to theirposterity. In all probability it was about the year 1670 theyleft Britain to Seek their Fortunes in this then new world. Incoming over sea Jeremiah was much troubled with Sea sicknessand being attacked at the same time with a bleeding of the nosethe conjunct disorders ended his Life; and left his brother theonly man of the name to begin a new family in a new world.Christopher Leamyeng Landed in Some parts of New England near orat Boston. From Some Circumstances and the best accounts we canobtain it was about the year 1674 that he married to EstherBurnett, daughter of Aaron Burnet , her Father gave her a Tractof Land at Sag near East Hampton which to this time I aminformed goes by the name of Leamings Lot or Leamings corner. There he lived till about the year 1691 and then leaving hisfamily at Long Island he came himself to Cape May which at thattime was a new Country & beginning to Settle very fast andseemed to promise good advantages to the adventurers. Here hewent a whaling in the proper Seasons and at other times workedat the Coopers trade which was his occupation and good at thetime by reason the great Number of whales caught in those daysmade the demand and pay for Casks certain. The 9th of April1696 He caused to be surveyed for himself 204 acres of land seethis Vol. p. 93 [i.e. Aaron Leamings Book of Surveys] which wasafterwards purchased by his son Thomas Leamyeng and whereon hespent and ended his Life: And is now the estate of ChristopherLeaming, a minor, and Great Grandson to the founder of thefamily. Christopher Leaming died of Pleuresie at Cape May aboutthe year 1697 or 1697 aged 48 years as the reputation is: Butindeed I think the time of his Birth, Marriage and Death areuncertain. This diary entry has singular error, that Hester (Esther)Burnet's father was Aaron Burnet. He was actually her brother, her father was Thomas Burnet. Taken from old Family Group Sheet: Christopher Leaming first went by the name of Leamyeng. He left England about 1670, and landed in or near Boston. | Leaming, Christopher (I312684225565)

Speculating she was Elizabeth Browne There is a published article in Memories under John Hawkes that explains why so many people insist Elizabeth was Elizabeth Browne. It must be noted that this is not a primary source; this is speculating that Elizabeth was William Browne and Lydia Ward's daughter. Lydia Ward's brother, Nathaniel Ward, lived in Hartford. This article then jumps to the conclusion that Elizabeth Browne married John Hawkes, stating it as if it was a proven fact. Why? Because she was a single young woman named Elizabeth with connections in Hartford during the time period, her uncle lived there. There is no marriage record. There is no evidence that Elizabeth Browne married John Hawkes. While it may be true, it cannot be verified. We only know that his wife was named Elizabeth. | Elizabeth (I312684223713)

2885 | Children of Joshua Holcomb and Hannah Carrington Children of Ensign Joshua 3 Holcombe and Hannah Carrington were as follows: i. CALEB 4 was born on 1 May 1695 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. 97 He married Elizabeth Adams, daughter of Samuel Adams, in Sep 1725 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. 98 159. ii. JOSHUA was born on 18 Sep 1697 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. He married Marey Griffin, daughter of Thomas Griffin and Elizabeth Welton, on 28 Oct 1720 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. iii. THANKFUL was born on 8 Jan 1700/1 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. 99 She was baptized on 19 Jan 1700/1 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. 100 Named in father's will as daughter of Hannah. Seaver shows her marrying Joseph Barnes on 5-12-1700, which seems unlikely. 160. iv. EXPERIENCE was born in 1702. She married Nathaniel Alford, son of Josiah Alford and Hannah Westover, on 3 Jul 1724 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT 161. v. ELEANOR was born on 6 Jul 1706. She married John Griffin, son of Thomas Griffin and Elizabeth Welton, on 2 Aug 1725 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. 162. vi. MATTHEW was born on 7 May 1708. He married Unknown (--?--). He married Lydia Drake, daughter of Enoch Drake and Elizabeth Barber, on 20 Jan 1729/30 at Windsor, Hartford Co., CT. vii. HANNAH was born in 1710. She died D.Y. viii. HANNAH was born in 1711. McCracken states that birth not found; named in father's will as daughter of Hannah, birth circa 1704-05; Seaver gives birth twice as 1710. McCracken in NEHGS says 1710. McCracken notes (TAG 1981) that spouse is John Reade, not John Reuel as stated in the Hayes Genealogy. Bowman spells it Read in one place, Reed in another. There is confusion about the Hannah that married John Read (Reed, Reade). In NEHGS, April 1958, McCracken lists her as the daughter of Joshua and Mary (Hoskins) Holcombe. Most of the evidence indicates the Hannah that married John Reade is the daughter of Nathaniel Holcombe and wife Thankful Hayes. Note NOTE: This name is spelled HOLCOMBE by some sources. JOSHUA HOLCOMB II was born in Windsor, CT. and died Feb. 10, 1727. additional spouses additional spouses Notes from Internet Research, "Ancestors Notes from Internet Research, "Ancestors of Paul E.Courtwright"(included with the Messenge r family group sheets),indicates: Served as a representative from Simsbury, Connecticut to theGeneralAssembly. !SOURCE: NSW GEN. We do not have a death date, but he was listed as 18 yrs. of ae. at inventory of father, 1690. Childden of Joshua Holcomb and Mary Hoskins Children of Enisgn Joshua 3 Holcombe and Mary Hoskins were as follows: 163. i. DAVID 4 was born on 22 Jul 1713 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. He married Sarah Slater, daughter of Elias Slater and Ruth (--?-- ), on 24 Dec 1735 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT 164. ii. MERCY was born on 4 Sep 1714 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. She married Sgt. Richard Case, son of Capt. Richard Case and Amy Reed, on 4 May 1733 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. iii. MIRIAM was born on 11 Jul 1716 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. 101 She died on 16 Sep 1718 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT, at age 2. 102 McCracken shows two Miriams, Seaver only one. iv. ROBERT was born either 2 Mar 1717 or 1718 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. 103 He died either 8 Mar 1717 or 1718 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. McCracken disputes Simsbury Records that show birth 1718/19. v. SARAH was born on 2 May 1719. There may be some confusion with another Sarah, dau. of John Holcombe, who was also listed as being born May 2, 1719. 165. vi. MIRIAM was born on 18 Jan 1719/20 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. She married Noah Case, son of John Case and Abigail Humphrey, on 5 May 1740 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. vii. JOAB was born circa 1720. He died on 5 Dec 1723 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. 104 No birth found. McCracken places him here but also shows a second Joab as does Seaver. Bowman thinks this is the Joab that Seaver lists as a child of Joshua Sr. viii. BATHSHEBA was born on 3 Jan 1721/22 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. 105 Not in Seaver, McCracken states not in father's will. 166. ix. JOEL was born on 18 Aug 1723 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. He married Sarah Buel in 1745. x. JOAB was born circa 1724. He died on 9 Feb 1725/26 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. 106 Second Joab of same parents. 167. xi. PHINEAS was born on 4 Feb 1726 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. He married Sarah Tuller, daughter of Jacob Tuller and Mary Moses, in 1745. On 2 April 1728 Mary Holcombe petitioned for her share of the estate. On 1 Jan 1739/40 she was appointed guardian of her son Joel, aged 16. Stiles (2:395) says he married Mary Griffin which is wrong. He married, first, Hannah Carrington, born 1675, died, according to the Rev. Dudley Woodbridge, 13 May 1707, daughter of John Carrington of Waterbury, whose parents were probably executed as witches; second, Mary Hoskins, born 3 Sept. 1689, died after 1740, daughter of Robert Hoskins (Anthony) by his wife Mary Gillett. ! married #2--Mary Hoskins in 1709 at Si ! married #2--Mary Hoskins in 1709 at Simsbury, Hartford, CT (sealed: 17 Mar 1951 L) ! married #2--Mary Hoskins in 1709 at Simsbury, Hartford, CT (sealed: 17 Mar 1951 L) | Holcomb, Joshua II (I312684223326)

Barber, M.D. 1643-1888 - 974.62/54 H2b (microfiche-6019695) pp. 114-115: Mr. Thomas Barber was the eighth and last-name of the Patentees of the town (Simsbury). He was born in Windsor, the son of Thomas Barber, the emigrant, who was one of the 20 young men who came over from England, with Mr. Francis Stiles, in 1635, and were among the earliest settlers of Windsor. The subject of this sketch was born in 1644. In 1666 he married Mary Phelps, daughter of William Phelps, one of the first Magistrates, and a prominent member of the General Court of Connecticut. In 1667, he was one of those who appeared and signed for an allotment of land at Massaco (Simsbury), by the Committee appointed by the General Court for this purpose. In 1669 he was residing in Massaco - one of the 13 freemen of the plantaion. In 1671, only a year after the incorporation of the town, he entered into a contract with the town to erect a Meeting house for public worship. From the first, he was ever active in efforts to promote the public worship. From the first, he was ever active in efforts to promote the public welfare. He erected the first mills in the town, and held successively the several important offices. He was particularly active in the ecclesiastical affairs of the town. He was one of the solid men of the town. Next to Capt. Higley he was the heaviest tax payer. Mr. Barber was also prominent as a military man, inheriting from his father, who was a soldier in the Pequot war, the true military spirit. "It is reported of him that at a time when the savages were surrounding the town, with a determintation to destroy its inhabitants in the darkness of the night, that by means of his military skill and sagacity, he prevented their attack; that the next morning, the wind being fair, he ascended the roof of his house, in the place called Hop meadow, and beat an alarm on his drum. The beat was heard and understood at Windsor, severn or eight miles off. The militia took the alarm, and a company under arms made their appearance in the afternoon at Simsbury." (Barber's History of my own Times.) He was a Lieutenant under Capat. Higley. His Commission signed by Gov. Winthrop, in 1693, is now in the possession of the writer of this sketch, one of his descendants. Lieut. Barber died in 17 13, and was buried with military honors in the cemetery of the town. Note (3): The Connecticut Barbers - A Genealogy of the descendants of Thomas Barber of Windsor, Conn. By Donald S. Barber, M.D. 929.273 B233bd page 5: THOMAS BABER, bp Windor CT 14 Jul 1644: d Simsbury CT 10 May 1713: m Windsor 17 Dec 1663 Mary Phelps b 2 Mar 1644 daughter of William Sr and Mary (Dover) Phelps. After Thomas dnd Mary were married, they lived in a house built by Thomas in Windsor. About 1670/71 he moved his family to Simsbury along with his brother Samuel and family. On March 3, 1676 during the so-called "{King Phillip's War", Lieutenant Thomas Barber of the original military company of Simsbury was instrumental in saving the Simsbury residents, according to an old tradition. Some of Phillip's Wampanoag Indians threatened to attack the town. Thomas "ascended the roof of his house, in the place called Hopmeadow, and beat an alarm on his drum. The wind being favorable, the alarm was heard in Windsor, some seven or eight miles off". The Windsor militia, hearing the alarm, quickly assembled, rushed to Simsbury and were able to evacuate safely the people of Simsbury to safety in Windsor, where they stayed for several months. Eventually they returned to their community and began the task of rebuilding. King Phillip burned and destroyed everything on March 26th, 1676. Once the town was rebuilt life in Simsbury was due to change. Up to this point the grain grown by the farmers had to be hauled to the Warham Gristmill in Windsor. This was no easy task, due to weather conditions not always being favorable, the roads leaving much to be desired even for the oxen, and the lessening dager of attacks by Indians or wild animals. Thomas Barber had proven his leadership ability during the King Phillip's War, and now his skills, along with those of 3 other men were contracted by the town for a more peaceful pursuit: that of building and running a sawmill and gristmill. The Simsbury gristmill built by these men in about 1680 was still in operation until the early 1950's, when the mill was operated as a Jute Yarn factory under the owner ship of R H Ensign. After that the mill was idle for about 30 years. In 1985 major renovations took place The Ensign-Bickford Company dismantled the entire building board by board and reassemled it. The present-day building is beautifully restored winnig for the owners the Greater Hartford Architecture Conservancy Award. The Hop Brook Restaurant is lacated in the present structure. This is an absolutely delightful place beside the brook. for lunch or dinner. The aughor highly recommends it. Thomas Barber's carpentry skills, passed on from his father, were much in demand and he later built the first church in Simsbury, in 1683. He was hired by the town in 1671 to build a meeting house for public worship, but for 12 years there was a bitter argument over which side of the river it would be built on. Finally 2 ships of paper were place in a hat and one was deawn, in favor of the West side of the reiver. Once it was completed, the new building was used for 60 years. MARRIAGE: 1. ANSWER: Based on the following logic, father was Daniel SMITH. [Following logic by Richard William COOPER son of William Henry COOPER.] [Richard COOPER entries in []s ] 1. [SOURCE CH100 pg 119-120] [Sanderson (SOURCE CH100) challenges Bond's (SOURCE CH079) assignment of Elizabeth's parentage to Daniel SMITH and Mary GRANT. He says parents should be John SMITH and Mary Beech] 2. [Sanderson wrote in SOURCE CH100 pg 119-120]: "John Pierce married Elizabeth Smith in 1702. She is stated by Bond to have been the daughter of Daniel and Mary (Grant) Smith but it is improbable as that Elizabeth died May 30, 1690." 3. [SOURCE CH079 pg 62-63 has an entry:] "1690" "Elizabeth Smith died the: 30: of May:" [Sanderson offers no proof for this being the Elizabeth to which he refers and this entry shows no relationships to anyone.] 4. [Sanderson continues:] "It is much more probable that she was a daughter of John Smith son of the pioneer Thomas, who married Mary Beech and had a son-in-law John Peirce." 5. [Sanderson must have meant the Mary Beech and the John Smith recorded in SOURCE CH079 ppg 8-9 and ppg 26-27] [BIRTHS:] "1641." "Mary the daughter of Richard & Mary Beech borne 11 (10)" "John the son of Thomas and Mary Smith borne 10 (10)" [SOURCE CH079 pg 26] [MARRIAGE:] "1664" "John Smith & Mary Bech maryed Apr. 19" [SOURCE CH079 pg 27] [MARRIAGE:] "1665." "John Smith & Mary Beech weare Maryed 19 of april" 6. [Although there are many births of children to John and Mary Smith in Watertown, listed in SOURCE CH079 following their marriage in 1664-65, in the years 1667 (pg 29, "Mary...15 Jun"); 1668 (pg 30, "John...the 8 of the 6th mo"); 1670 (pg 32, "Samuell...the 22: 2d mo"); 1670 (pg 33, "Abigall..the 29 of June") 1672 (ppg 35-36, "Hanah...27 of December"); 1675 (ppg 40-41,"Sary..7th of June") 1679 (pg 47. "Samuel...the 10 March"); there is no record in the Watertown records of such an Elizabeth born to John and Mary Smith] 7. [Additionally, There is a birth record of an Elizabeth SMITH to a Daniel and Mary SMITH: SOURCE CH079 pg 37] "1673" "Elizabeth smith daughter of danill and Mary Smith borne the 15 of January" 8. [Charles Hudson SOURCE CH088 also assigns the parantage of Elizabeth SMITH to Daniel and Mary (GRANT)] [SOURCE CH088 ppg 532-533] "John Pierce, born 27 May 1673, died 1743-1744. Resided at Waltham. He married 5 Nov. 1702 Elizabeth Smith, b 15 Jan. 1673, died at Watertown 20 Sept. 1747, daughter of Daniel and Mary (Grant).] 9. This source is considered the definitive bio of Richard Brownson, according to the Society of the Descendants of the Founders of Hartford. According to Timothy Lester Jacobs, Genealogist with The Society (on the Society web site on Jan 2020): "There are several genealogies dealing with Richard Bronson, none of which can be recommended due to numerous confusions between the children of Richard and his brother John, and the maintenance of a myth that the three Bronsons of Hartford were children of a Richard Bronson. The only definitive work on the Bronsons is that of John I. Coddington in “The American Genealogist” Vol. 38 article “The Brownson, Bronson, or Brunson Family of Earl’s Colne, Essex, England, - Connecticut, and South Carolina”…." https://www.foundersofhartford.org/the-founders/richard-bronson/ TRANSCRIPTION from this source: Richard Brownson ... married, first ... ca 1642-3, ___ (whose given name is usually stated to have been Abigail) Weyborn or Wyborne, apparently youngest child of John Wyborne of Wrotha, co Kent, England, yeoman, by an unknown wife ... 2899 | Conflict regarding Esther's father According to "Historical & Genealogical Miscellany" Vol. III, by John E Stillwell, on page 428 he begins a literal transcript of the diary of Aaron Leaming II. "It was written by Aaron Leaming, the Second, and contains, no doubt, much of the diary of his father, Aaron Leaming, the First . . ." The transcription includes "Christopher Leamyeng landed in some parts of New England near or at Boston. From some circumstances and the best accounts we can obtain it was bout the year 1674 that he married to Esther Burnett, the daughter of Aaron Burnett of the East End of Long Island and her father gave her a tract of land at Sag near East Hampton . . ." Since this information is from a literal transcription of a diary of Christopher & Esther's grandson which includes information from the diary of their son Aaron, I believe that Esther father was Aaron rather than Thomas. I do see posted document pages supporting Thomas as her father, but do not see any reference to where the authors obtained the information.
