Johann Adam: son Joseph Joost Loucks UEL #GQ5X-6TF

life sketch
Johann Adam was the second generation in America that came from Germany. Some of the Loucks (Laux) families were split on their loyalities before the Revolutionary War. Some were Torries, but Johann Adam was a freedom fighter. He was a leader among his people: he hosted the 1st meeting of the Committee of Safety of Tryon County at his house on August 27, 1774. A NY highway marker shows the location where the house stood (still there?). It was known as the Loucks Tavern, and after the war it was an inn where Johann Adam served as the Justice of the Peace. Johann Adam was a Private in the Revolutionary War and fought in the Battle of Oriskany. Not only did he serve, but his sons Joost and Peter served too.

Johann married Catherine Snell and they had 13 children!!

His father-in-law, John D Snell, also served in the Battle of Oriskany with his 7 sons. Six of his sons lost their lives in that battle. It must have been a sad time for Catherine and her father right after the war.

Johann Adam had a will that mentioned his daughter Ann C, the late wife of Julius Bush and her son Hendrick Bush.

In his 1790 census, it shows Johann owned 1 slave! Did not know this before now.

Johann Adam is my 6x great-grandfather: Contributor Renee Bartlett # LY2K-FLL

NOTE: from Chuck Wilcox's records.....He resided in Sharon,CT ...1763 and 1784. His father gave him, on November 06, 1753 (perhaps at the time of his marriage)...."In consideration of the parental love and good will & affection I bear to my loving son-Steven.", 20 acres in Sharon, CT. April 16, 1763 he sold land there, as of Sharon.. On December 30, 1784 he witnessed a deed there. Served in the "Ft.Wm. Henry Alarm"...in the French War-1757. No record of the birth of his children has been found in Simsbury, Sharon or Norwalk, CT. Children record probably incomplete. ADDITIONAL NOTES: from Chuck Wilcox- - - I found in Michigan State Library "History of Towns of Rensselear County", by A.J. Weise; Stephen Marvin was a signer of the origional association paper of the town of Lansingburg, NY on May 22, 1775. Was this our Stephen? It seems likely, as his grandson, Steven, was born in Lansingburg in 1791.

25 Oct 1999: Transcription of obituary of daughter Mary Elizabeth Richardson Griffin into this database revealed perplexing conundrum: LDS Ancestral File #4D2G-L6 shows given name as "Jophiah "A"" which defies all convention. Obituary indicates Mary Elizabeth was "born July 5, 1887 at Malad to Josiah and Ruth Richardson. This record should probably be clarified. 26 Dec 1999: Analysis of Pedigree Resource File entry by Heather Elaine Sorensen McPhie, 112 James Road, Galway, NY 12074, dated 30 Aug 1999, indicates this person's middle name is Albert. GCB 26 Feb 2000: Possible Problems Report indicates that "Temple was not open on Endowment Date." Fields of 22 Mar 1883 SLAKE deleted for repass against Ordinance index. McCracken, pg 163 (cont. from The American Genealogist, Vol. 57, pg 76.). Died at age 84 at Simsbury of the falling of a small tree. His will was dated 29 May 1759, probated 2-3 Nov 1761, witnessed by three, John Owen, Esther Owen and Rosecitte Owen. The handwriting of the two women is no similar that one suspects one signed for both. The will leaves a third to beloved wife Mary. Having already given by deeds of conveyance to beloved grand children Jonathan Holcomb and Michael Holcomb and Ame Holcomb, the children and heirs of beloved and eldest son Jonathan Holcomb now deceased, "the full of the portion I Designe for them," he now bequeaths to beloved son Azariah Holcomb and his heirs and assigns forever, "he paying all my Just Debts, and Legacies hereafter mentioned, my Dwelling house and Barn and home Lot and Orcharding, together with all my Lands thereto adjoining, Lying on Salmon Brook, on both sides the Brook, and also my Lot in the Estwoods in Salmon Brook Society near Thomas Bacons Land in partnershipwith Edward Matson, and also I give unto my Said Son Azariah all my Moveable Estate, to be for him and his heirs forever." To beloved daughter Mary, wife of Amos Case, 10 pounds to be paid withinone year after decease, "together with what I have already given her", to be paid her within one year. To beloved grandson Abner Holcomb all "my Common or undevided Lands Lying in Simsbury". Son Azariah Holcomb sole executor. The will is signed by an elderly but not senile signature. The probation is interesting. The two female witnesses swore on 2 Nov 1761, John Owen Esq., the other witness, swore before J. Talcott, Just. Peace. The inventory, not dated, was taken by Nathaniel Holcomb, Peter Rice and Hos. Willcocks and came to 289/15/2, wit h additional 3/14/6. The items include the usual clothing, tools, farming implements, etc., and 13 barrels of cider, and though I miss any firearms, there are several powder horns, powder, and brass bullet moulds. The executor presented but did not sign an account of his expenses coming to 28/7/9. The deceased had married first, ca. 1700, Mary Buell, born 23 Dec 1677, died at Simsbury, 21 June 1720, daughter of Peter Buell (William) by his first wife Martha Cogan and she was the mother of all the children; second, on 22 June 1721, Mary Saxton, widow of William Gillett, who had died at Simsbury, 27 Jan 1718/19. On 7 April 1719 administration was granted on Gillett's estate to the sidow Mary (Manwaring 2:389). On 3 Nov 1730, Mary Holcomb, administratrix, and Jonathan Holcomb were cited to appear, the case of Mary and Jonathan Holcomb vs. Daniel Gains being heard on 1 Dec 1730. This Daniel Gains had married Eunice, daugher of William Gillett (Jonathan, Jonathan) by Mary Saxton, and his interest was on behalf of his wife.
