!This Caleb is important. It is he and his sons that moved to Smith County after the Revolution. From the Revolutionary War Records (NC: p. 597), Caleb served as a drummer for the Caswell County company of Capt. Berryman Turner in the North Carolina Regiment of Col. McDonald. He was probably discharged 30 July 1779. This is quite early since the war in North Carolina didn't heat up until the Gen. N. Greene - Cornwallis campaign of 1781. There is a Stephen Carman who also served as Sergeant in Benjamin Coleman's Company of the 2nd North Carolina Battalion, commanded by John Patton. It is curious that we do not know to which Carman line Stephen belonged. In 1793, Caleb turned over his 150 acre farm to son Elijah and the latter must have been responsible for most of the farming. At that time, Caleb had two slaves and when they were in Tennessee two decades later they still had only two slaves. I have copies of this deed to Elijah of Dec. 1793. It names the unmarried daughters, Sarah and Hannah, as well as sons, Elijah and John. There are records of this family living in Caswell Co until at least 1803. Indeed, Elijah's son Thomas was born in Caswell Co in 1805. Very shortly thereafter, they (families of father Caleb and sons Elijah and John) migrated to Smith County. They were accompanied by nephew William, his wife Sarah and at least five children. Whether William's son Elijah was born, in 1804, in North Carolina or Tennessee isn't clear. It is clear that Jefferson and Tennessee were born in Tennessee. It is also probably true that William's father John, Caleb's brother, had already moved to Jefferson Co TN by this time. Tennessee was originally broken off from North Carolina in 1783. Smith Co was originally settled in early 1788 by Tilman Dixon. The Walton Road led over the Cumberland Plateau to Carthage on the north bank of the Cumberland River on the Avery Trace. They then came to a beautiful valley formed by two creeks, about 6 miles west of Carthage. One of these was Dixon Creek. I have not traced the relationship of Tilman Dixon to Jeremiah Dixon of 1764 Mason-Dixon line fame. The popular overnight camping spot near the intersection of Dixon Creek and Avery Trace Road was at Dixon Spring, a community with post office that still exists, as does the Dixon home, which dates from 1788-89. The first court in Smith County was held here in 1799. On 14 Mar 1812, the Carthage Gazette published a letter from Capt. Tilman Dixon to Brig. Gen. James Winchester that was represented as a statement by a number of Revolutionary War veterans. Among them was Caleb Carman (6) (but not William Carman (7), his nephew). The letter declared their intention to defend the home front against the British while the younger men went off to war. (William's (7) son William (8) was obviously among this latter group.) Dixon is buried at his home, but Caleb is believed to be buried in the Carman/Harris Graveyard, Shady Grove (Near Lock 6), Trousdale Co. Trousdale Co was the last of the counties split from Smith (21 Jun 1870). The county line is just a few hundred yards from Dixon Creek. The creeks drain into the Cumberland to the south, but to the north the valley is quite arable and wide for some miles. Caleb and his two sons (the other four children were daughters) are the successful tobacco farmers. They probably farmed together. Today, this valley wouldn't be considered for tobacco, and I suspect that is why others moved on to Graves County. Today it produces cows, horses, and feed. It has good water and good soil. The older brother, Elijah, inherited this Smith County Tobacco farm. SOURCES: The Caswell Co Deed Book H, pp 280-281 and Caswell Co Tax records are very helpful in showing that probably only Hezekiah's family remained after 1803. K. K. !This marriage place and date seem a bit suspect. Why would they be in Baltimore? Who was Elinor Talbott? Note that son John was born before his parents were married. SOURCE: Marvin Carman.

I have a Family Group Sheet from Familysearch.com on Hezekiah and Elinor Carman which lists their son, John William Carman was born 1756 in Caswell, NC. I do not see any discrepancy. Deborah Garrett.

John's birth is likely off a year or two; or, Hezekiah & Eleanor were married more than once in two different faith's. They were certainly ghosts while in Maryland, and her family were Quaker in part. John's birth then is taken from his military records and the marriage from published Maryland abstracts.

John William & Maryland
First, Clarice Carman with whom I researched for many years in the 1970's & 80's was the author of "John William" being one man. We then received copies of the Bible of William & Sarah [Quine] Carman from Connie Hackman which enabled us to divide that family from John & Sarah [Hancock] Carman's definitively. They are first cousins. The error perpetuates.

Louis Duermyer of NY was the one who first led Flora Alexander & I to Maryland. He had a transcript of the estate of Jasper Carman, [brother of John who married Hannah], and deeds showing that John had sold out and left long before he arrived in VA/NC. That estate file has, unfortunately, vanished and I have been unable to access it either through the courthouse in NJ, or microfilm.

1749 was the year of upheaval. Jasper also sold his lands and moved, but not as far as did John and others. From various sources, [among them "The Great Wave" by David Hackett Fisher], it is established that the period was one of repeated recessions. Europe was in upheaval with war after war, [French & Indian 1754-63] being the portion thereof most affecting the American Colonies. John, thus far, has not been proven to have made any land purchase in MD and then of course came the insurrection which became the American Revolution.

John was in North Carolina at least by 1777 when he appears in a census substitute in the form of oaths of allegiance and tax rolls which also doubled as militia rolls. Following his scant trail of papers it is apparent he was determined to "move up" as was the American way, but found himself constantly facing adversity in so doing. He was not alone in his trek to the south between 1776-8 - and managed in NC to achieve his goal.

I tested the theory by scouring records for "other" Hezekiah Carman's of any spelling and, luckily, it was a name not oft repeated! He is "not of New Jersey" in 1758 when his Uncle Jasper left him a stipend in his will. In that period - there was only one from which to choose. Likewise, when the Hezekiah in MD should finally show up in records; he has again vanished and the one in NC surfaces - WITH a father of the right name AND a brother and sister named Caleb & Abigail - the names of his grandparents in NJ. Too many coincidences - preponderance of evidence.

I am hopeful that once all microfilmed records are scanned, that long misfiled estate file will be found once again. Regardless, there is but one option through the life of Hezekiah Carman from which to choose. It must be him/them!

Ordinances information from an old family group sheet collection (assembled by Ervin and Clea Lynn of Lovell, Wyoming)
An old family group sheet in this collection (assembled by Ervin and Clea Lynn) contains some contrary ordinance dates, spellings, and other details. This collection was probably retyped (from other family members) and assembled in the 1950s and 60s. It is sufficient to know that all ordinances for the parents and children in this family have been completed.

New Haven, Conn. 1929. "He inherited the middle part of his father's house lot. In his will dated 8 Jan 1746-7, he mentions his wife Experience Cowles and several relatives, but gives to his cousin (great-nephew) Nathaniel Cowles, then living with him, all of his real estate and most of his personal property and constituted him executor. Porter says that John Cowles gave his house and lot and most of his property to his nephew, Nathaniel Cowles, who guaranteed his support during life; that for many of the last years of his life he was superannuated and helpless and a burden to Nathaniel's widow and his son, Nathaniel, whose father died in 1724. John Cowles' will tends to contradict this statement in part at least, as no proof has been found that he gave Nathaniel his property. In 1727 he was appointed guardian to Nathaniel Cowles, a minor two years of age, and in 1741 Nathaniel Cowles, 16 years of age, chose Deacon Hart to be his guardian. The widow of Nathaniel married again in 1728 and it is not probable that John Cowles was a burden to her afterwards, if at all." "Genealogy of The Cowles Family in America" Vol. I, compiled by Col. Calvin Duvall Cowles, U.S.A., retired, Historian of the Cowles Family Association, published by Tuttle, Morehouse & Taylor, Co. New Haven, Conn. 1929.

!21. THOMAS5 WEAVER, (William,4 (7) Clem
!21. THOMAS5 WEAVER, (William,4 (7) Clement,3 Clement,2 Clement1) born in East Greenwich
Jan. 12, 1708. His gravestone in the Common Burying Ground in Newport states that he died May 29,
1770, aged 62 years.

He married in East Greenwich Nov. 26, 1732, Dinah Whitford, daughter of Nicholas and Mary
Whitford of Portsmouth, East Greenwich and West Greenwich. She was born about 1712 and died
between May 15, 1770, and Feb. 15, 1773, as shown by the wills of her husband and her son Thomas,
and was buried on Coasters Harbor Island, off Newport, from which fact it seems likely she was a
victim of smallpox.

He was a cooper by trade, and lived in his native town as late as 1735, removing soon afterward to
Newport, where he was admitted as a freeman May 3, 1737.

His will is found among the restored records of Newport which lay submerged in the ocean many
months after being sunk by the British during the Revolution. It is very faint and difficult to read, but
nearly every word can be deciphered in a favorable light. It reads, in substance, as follows:

Will of Thomas Weaver of Newport, Cooper.
Dated May 15, 1770--proved July 2, 1770.
After ordering that his body be decently buried and his debts be paid, he left "to my well beloved wife
all my estate both real and personal while she remains my widow until her death, then I do give and
bequeath it unto my children that shall be then living, all my estate to be divided amongst them share
and share alike." He authorized the sale of a small dwelling house and some land, and named his wife,
Dinah Weaver, as executrix.

The inventory, recorded July 3, 1770, footed œ112. (Newport Council Records 16, 146-7.)

57- IV. Thomas,6 born about 1744 in Newport.
58- V. William,6 b. about 1748.
VI. Joseph,6 b. 1751; d. April 19, 1759.
VII. Nicholas.6 The dates of his birth and death are not known. He may have
married and had a family, but no descendants have been found. Aug.
31, 1774, he executed a deed to John Hudson, his brother-in-law, of
Newport, of one quarter of the two small lots at Easton's Point, numbers
30 and 37 and of the house on them which had been left by his father.

He served in the Revolution as gunner's yeoman on the sloop Providence, one of the ships in the John
Paul Jones fleet of which the flagship was the Alfred, and was reported in Boston in December,
1776, as entitled to a share in two prizes, the Mellish and the Active. The names of the officers and
men entitled to share in the prize money were recorded in Massachusetts.

At the taking of the Military Census of Rhode Island in 1777 he was in Providence, but gave his
residence as Newport.

Probably it was he who was Second Lieutenant on the privateer "Eagle," which was fitted out in
Boston in 1778.
