He was the devoted and long-suffering husband of Anne (Marbury) Hutchinson, who was expelled from Boston for her outspoken questioning of accepted religious doctrine. When she was ordered to leave Boston, but given a reprieve because of her health and the fact it was winter, he went to Rhode Island to prepare a place for them. Whereas their house in Boston had been one of the most substantial, and he considered a leading citizen, when they moved to Rhode Island they first lived in a cave on a river-bank. The Hutchinson family sailed with Rev. John Cotton. They were part of a kinship network of 38 individuals, many of whom had important mercantile copnnections. Through intermarriage this network grew large and became influential both economically and politically. !SOURCE: John Sanford and his Descendant !SOURCE: John Sanford and his Descendants p 347. It was in October 1723 that the house lot numbers were drawn by the seventy-two proprietors, including the one set aside for the use of the Minister. Joseph Wilson drew Lot #47. His brother, Jonathan was also among those drawing original lots as a compensation for services performed by them in the Indian wars under Captain White of Lancaster. Joseph's brothers Samuel, Nathaniel, and brother-in-law Jonathan Houghton are listed as early settlers. In this early history it is recorded that Joseph built one of the first houses in Petersham. Probably as early as the spring of 1734 the male members of the families were on hand to begin their various settlements. Joseph and Rebecca [Phelps] first four children were probably born in Lancaster: Joseph, Solomon, William, and Abner. Church records show Joseph's wife, "Rebeckah" was dismissed from the Lancaster church and recommended for Nichewaug [Petersham], on July 8, 1734. Five years passed before the appointment of a minister in Petersham, preaching being maintained a portion of the time, and probably the reason for Abner and Elizabeth's baptism in Lancaster. The birth of Elizabeth, David, Elijah, Lydia, Deliverance, Mary, Releaf, and William are recorded in the vital records of Petersham. All of these children married into settler families of Petersham, and many are recorded on the town records as being involved in the development of this newly established settlement. Joseph served as a selectman for several years. Lancaster Records, Mass. L, p. 26, 271, Lancaster Records, Mass. 2292 | !SOURCES: The Taylor bible record from P !SOURCES: The Taylor bible record from Paducah DAR (Marvin Carman calls this the "William Carman-Sarah Quine bible"). It says William's parents were John and Nancy. We get confirmation of this through John's will (Jefferson Co TN Will Book Vol. 3, 11 February 1827; FHL #968312) bequeaths to son Caleb all his property except: to wife Nancy her bed and furniture; son William $1.; son Joseph $1.; daughter Jane $1. See also Caswell Co. Deed Book A, 1782, p. 611 (I have a copy.). The Ragle genealogy of Carmans from Casey Co KY says he made three unsuccessful applications for a Revolutionary War Pension. He clearly was the right age and his brother, Caleb, did fight in that war. However, the Ragle work is badly flawed. The Casey Co John Carman stem from Hezekiah (6), not John (6). However, Hezekiah's son John was too young to have fought in the Revolution, while this John was the right age. He may have been unsuccessful because the military records do not show that he served. There is uncertainty as to when John moved from Caswell Co to Jefferson Co TN. It was probably between 1789 and 1797 (The listing on p. 81 of the 1790 NC Census, Genealogical Publishing Co., 1973 is not a precise listing of a common name.) A good guess would be 1796. In 1788 John Carman and Tillman Dixon were summoned to jury duty in Caswell County. His daughter Jane married in Jefferson Co in 1798. Some Jefferson Co. genealogists claim he was in Maryland at some point. I believe all of this stems from a mistake in the 1850 Census that list John's son Caleb (7) as being born in Maryland in 1769. John, John Jr., and Caleb and families were in NC in 1776 (See John 5, RIM 130). Then in 1782, his brother Hezekiah deeded in 1782 his property on Rattlesnake Creek in Caswell County to his brothers John and Caleb. Yet both John and Caleb left Caswell County (John for Jefferson Co, TN and Caleb for Smith Co. TN) not many years thereafter. Hezekiah remained in Caswell Co with his son Elijah.
