The Puritans were a group of English Protestants in the 16th and 17th centuries
The Puritans were a group of English Protestants in the 16th and 17th centuries who sought to rid the Church of England of Roman Catholic practices, believing that the Church of England had not been fully reformed and should become more Protestant 1. They were dissatisfied with the limited extent of the English Reformation and with the Church of England’s toleration of certain practices associated with the Roman Catholic Church 1. Puritans formed and identified with various religious groups advocating greater purity of worship and doctrine, as well as personal and corporate piety 1. They adopted a covenant theology, and in that sense, they were Calvinists (as were many of their earlier opponents) 1. In church polity, some advocated separation from all other established Christian denominations in favor of autonomous gathered churches 1. These Separatist and Independent strands of Puritanism became prominent in the 1640s, when the supporters of a presbyterian polity in the Westminster Assembly were unable to forge a new English national church 1. By the late 1630s, Puritans were in alliance with the growing commercial world, with the parliamentary opposition to the royal prerogative, and with the Scottish Presbyterians with whom they had much in common 1. Consequently, they became a major political force in England and came to power as a result of the First English Civil War (1642–1646) 1.

!SOURCES: 1. The Family Memorial by Payne Kenyon Kilbourne page 27 2. Jack R. Lewis P.O. Box 570050 Sigurd, UT 84657-0050 !NOTES: 2. Captain John Kilbourne was one of six, born in Wethersfield, CT. He added an "e" to his name and married Dorothy Butler. IN 1721 he moved his family to Litchfield, CT. Their children were: Dorothy, Joseph, Jonathan, James. ! 1. Joseph was born in Wethersfield about the year 1672, and was married to Dorothy, daughter of Deac. Samuel Butler, June 4, 1696, by Capt. John Chester, Commissioner. She having died on the 19th of August, 1709, he was married, a second time, to Hester, daughter of Jacob Gibbs of Windsor, June 29, 1710, by Col. Mathew Allyn, Assistant. The children of Joseph and Dorathy were, Dorathy, Joseph, Jonathan, and James; the children of Joseph and Hester were, Benjamin, Hester, Elizabeth and Mary. He was one of the first settlers of Litchfoeld, and one of the founders of the Presbyterian church of that town. He was admitted an inhabitant of L. on the 12th of December, 1721, and at the next annual Town Meeting (holden Dec. 17, 1722) he was chosen a Selectman, his colleagues being John Stodder and Nathaniel Horsford. At an adjourned meeting holden on the 26th of the same month, he was appointed, with two others, "a committee for building the meeting-house." He served his fellow-townsmen in various offices, and occasionally as Moderator of their town meetings, until his death. For the following accounts of the lands of Joseph Kilborn and their location, I am indebted to Geo. C. Woodruff, Esq., the Post Master of Litchfield. Samuel Lewis and John Man were original proprietors of the town of Litchfield, owning each one-sixtieth part of the township. Jan. 11, 1719-20, Lewis conveyed his right to Thomas Treadway; and Dec. 8, 1721, Treadway conveyed the same to Joseph Kilbourn, a part of which had already been surveyed amd set out, viz., a fifteen acre home-lot on the corner where the Country House and Jail now stand, a nd extending north 80 rods, (probably to about where Miss Pierce's house now stands) and west thirty rods in bredth; also, a twenty acre division on the corner above, where Rev. Dr, Beecher formerly resided, extending north fifty-four rods and west sixty rods. July 30, 1720, John Man conveyed his right to James Pike, and on May 23, 1722, Pike conveyed the same to Joseph Kilbourn. Our East and West street formerly run straight westerly till it came to a highway once running north past the dwelling of Mr. Alfred Peck. The cormer lot was bounded south by the street running west through our village, and west on the highway running north from Peck's and was surveyed to Joseph Peat; and the lot next east, being 30 rods in width and extending north 80 rods, was surveyed to Man, by him conveyed to Pike, and by Pike to Joseph Kilborn. The 20 acre division belonging to Joseph Kilborn, under Man's right, was bounded east on Bantam river and south on highway; it embraced the land lying north of the East Burying Ground - the Burying Ground lying mostly in the original highway. Joseph Kilborn having thus purchased the original rights of Lewis and Man, had sundry lots surveyed to him under those rights; each right entitled him to something like seven hundred acres of land. The surveys next after the 20 acre divisions, were lots of 60 acres each. 60 acres were set off to Joseph Kilborn on the hill west of "Butternut brook"; 60 acres on and east of the east branch of Bantam river, "at a place called Lock Hill", 100 acres half a mile eastward of the south end of the Great Pond; 100 acres "on the east side of the Bantam river". I cannot more particularly state the location of these lands. Sundry smaller divisions were made from time to time, and Joseph Kilborn purchased from time to time of others. It is probable that the whole of his rights were not surveyed to him during his life. He owned considerable land in Fat Swamp; 20 acres on Chestnut Hill, bought of Culver, &c., &c. In relation to the place of residence of Joseph Kilborn, I find that on the 19th of October, 1723, he conveyed to Joseph Kilborn, Jr., "half of that home-lot which my dwelling house standeth upon, bounded as followeth - south upon my own land, east upon the highway, north upon Wm. Goodrich, and west upon John Buel." This was the home-lot on the Country House corner. His Will, (omitting the preamble, which is very similar in form to those already printed) bears date "in the Eleventh year of the Reign of Our Sovereign Lord, George the Seecond. Anno Domini, 1737," and is as follows: "Imp's. I give and bequeath to ESTHER K., by dearly beloved Wife, my gray pacing mare, and one milch cow. "Item. I give and bequeath to my three daughters, DOROTHY, wife of Joseph Birge, ESTHER, wife of Samuel Smedley, and ELIZABETH, wife of Isaac Catlin, Ten Shillings apiece, that being the complement of what I design for their portion of my estate. "Item. I give and bequeath to my son, JONATHAN KILBORN, Twenty Acres of land, viz., the last Twenty Acre Division granted and drawn for upon the right of land in Litchfield. "Item. I give and bequeath to my two sons, JOSEPH and JAMES KILBORN, their heirs and assigns, all the remaining part of my estate, both real and personal, to be equally divided between the, the said JOSEPH and JAMES KILBORN; always provided that they, the said JOSEPH and JAMES KILBORN, shall comfortably amd decently provide for me and my wife both in sickness and health, for the whole term of our naturall lives. Furthermore, I do hereby constitute and appoint my two sons, JOSEPH and JAMES KILBORN, Executors of this my last Will and Testament, and I do by these presents disallow and revoke all former Wills and Testaments, ratifying and confirming this and no other, as my last Will and Testament, in virtue whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day and year mentioned. JOSEPH KYLLBORN [seal] The above Will was "witnessed" by Rev. Timothy Collens, Elizabeth Col lens, and Thomas Lamson; and was proved before the Court in 1744, which renders it probable that Joseph Kilborn died in that year. !Source: Gen. of the Hobbs Fam. pub. in July 1855. "Josiah b. in Boston in
1684, moved to Lexington, Mass., with his father, in 1690, where he resided
until about 1705. Being then 21 years of age, he returned to Boston, and there
remained for the next 25 years. In 1708, he married Esther Davenport, of
Dorchester, and resided at the north end of Boston, where he engaged in
agricultural pursuits. When far advanced in years he used to relate many
interesting events of his early days. He stated that himself, and his boys,
drove the cows to pasture from the north end of Boston to Muddy Creek, now
Brookline, and also to Roxbury; and that he had hoed corn on Cornhill. He and
his wife joined the New North Church, (Cotton Mather's), where all his
children, but one, were christened. In 1730, he took up residence in the town
of Weston, with his family, consisting of three sons and four daughters; their
youngest son, Nathan, being born the year after their removal. Mr. H.
purchased his farm, in Weston, of a Mr. Cheeny. This spot has been looked upon
as the home of the family, from that day to this, no records of which having
been kept, the traditions have passed down to us through the said Josiah. He
held with strictness to the faith and worship of our Puritan fathers, and was
careful to observe the rules and to practice all the austerities that belonged
to the sect at that day. Soon after their settlement at Weston, Mr. H. and his
wife connected themselves with the church in that place, of which the Rev.
William Williams and the Rev. Samuel Woodward were pastors. Mr. Hobbs died 27
Feb., 1779, aged 94 years. His widow deceased 29 Nov. 1778, aged 88."

Biography
Captain John (Francis, John) was born at Hampton.

John Peabody was born about 1642. His mother died when he was about 7 and his Dad remarried a year later and had nine more children. So John grew up in a household of fourteen children plus at least one child from his step-mother’s former marriage.

John first married Hannah Andrews in Topsfield, Massachusetts on Nov. 23, 1665,[1] in Topsfield, Essex, Massachusetts. Hannah was the daughter of Robert and Grace Andrews; she died Dec. 25, 1 700-1.

They were among the first settlers of Boxford, Massachusetts where John was the first school master. He served as town clerk for 24 years, was selectman for many years and captain of the militia.

John was made “freeman” in 1674. He was representative to the General Court 1689-1691. He was on the Salem Witchcraft jury which convicted John Willard. John Willard was sentenced to death and hung on August 19, 1692 .
After the trial, John and eleven other jury members were moved to sign and circulate a declaration of regret.[2]

He married second, Nov. 26, 1703, at Dorchester, Sarah Trescott Mosely, (widow of Increase Mosley) who survived him.[3]

He died July 5, 1720 in Boxford, Massachusetts at the age of 78. His will, dated Oct. 17, 1719, was proved in August 1720. His sons “David Pabody” and “Nathan Pabody” signed the agreement of heirs. In addition to them, legatees included his five married daughters, several grandchildren, three servants and his widow.[4]

John Pabody (Paybody, Peabody) born was born in Hampton. He first married Hannah, daughter of Robert and Grace Andrews.[5]

Jabez was 16 when he went, with his oldest brother Daniel, to New Jersey in 1667 (Note: Hendrick, p. 44, says that the year was 1677, which couldn't have been the case since he moved at age 16 and was married there in1677). New Jersey had been purchased from the Indians on October 28, 1664; his uncle, John Pike, and two others received permission in May, 1666, from Governor Carteret to settle two townships. He was appointed constable of Piscataway in 1692.

William was a carpenter and millwright.
William was a carpenter and millwright. The Old South Mills at Salem, MA were built by William and his Uncle Henry Bartholomew. He was at Hatfield 19 Sept 1677 at the time of the famous Indian raid. During this raid, his daughter Abigail was captured along with 13 others and taken captive by the Indians into Canada; She was later returned after a ransom was paid. He was at Deerfield, MA during King Philip's War and in 1678; he sold his houselot there in 1685. In 1679 he went to Branford, CT where he received a grant of 20 acres of land on condition that he would live there and build a grist mill. In 1781 he was given authority by the town to set up a saw mill there on the river and was later appointed surveyor of the town. In 1687 the town of Woodstock, CT was anxious to have him come and build a corn mill there; they granted him land there as well as to sons Isaac and William. He was one of the first selectmen of Woodstock.
