John Barrett married Sarah______ prior
John Barrett married Sarah______ prior to his settlement at Chelmsford, where he had a grant of land in 1659 and several grants and divisions of land later. He was a tithingman, Lieutenant, mill owner, and a comparitively large proprietor of lands. His wife Sarah joined him in a deed of land to their son-in-law Nathan Collar in 1698. This family of Baret, Barrett as the name is variously spelled, is of a very ancient and respectable account in this Kingdom {England}. Their ancestry is recorded in the Abbey {Battle Abbey} roll as one who came over with William, Duke of Normandy, and was present at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. "Hasted's History of Kent".

Beginning of search for David SCOTT
!RELATIONSHIP: Initial name from marriage of son William Scott, Belmont Co., Ohio !CENSUS: - 1860, Franklin twp., Des Moines Co., Iowa, p. 150 (age 69), birth place Pennsylvania, $2800 real estate, $100 personal estate, Dodgeville P.O.; - 1850, Franklin twp., p. 379 (age 56), birth place Ohio, $2000 real estate - 1840, Iowa Territory, (age 50-60--although I think he was probably only 49 at this time), males 20-30 (2) [Andrew-24 and John-22], 15-20 (2) [David Jr.-17 and ?], 10-15 (1) [Samuel-14], 5-10 (1) [James-6]; females 40-50 (1) [Catherine], 15-20 (1) [Martha-16], 5-10 (1) [Mary]. NOTE: William and Sarah are married before 1840. But in 1840 we are missing one male 15-20. !RESIDENCE: First recorded in Belmont Co., Ohio, by 1820 as shows up on tax list there. He and Catherine seem to have sold all their land there by 2 Apr 1839. !STORY: Norma Gechter Griswold, 2113 J 50 Road, Austin, Colorado, gives the following information about possible leads to father--tradition has it that David's father was immigrant ancestor. He was born in Scotland, moved to Ireland, met and married his wife there, then emigrated from the port of Belfast. There is a book in SLC on Washington Co., Penn., genealogies that lists a William who died in Stockton, Calif., on January 29, 1852. That William had an ancestry that matched the tradition. Also, in the Denver Public Library in the genealogy section, Norma found a Scott (I suppose) who was descended from a man who matched the tradition whose mother was a daughter of the leader of the McGregor clan. Author of this book was Jacobus. ??? !DEATH DATE: Assumed from William Scott's family Bible in poss of Jeannie Gechter, 524 East Freemont Avenue, Fresno, California 93710. (Entry simply says, "David Scott died August 12, 1866.") No other David SCOTTs could be identified in the family who might qualify for this death date.

I know that family tradition has maintained that Brice COLLINS of Cumberland and Mifflin Counties, Pennsylvania, and Belmont County, Ohio, had a wife named Ann, and her surname is given as DEVILLIER.

However, the wife named in Brice’s will probated in 1818 in Belmont County, not very long after the family’s relocation to that area, was Martha. Therefore, researchers have tried to reconcile this discrepancy by combining the two given names.

However, Martha is not a common given name in the French language, at least as far as I am aware. There is a daughter named Ann mentioned in the will from whom a large number of members of the LDS Church claim descent. And I am also aware of the Nauvoo Temple records naming her.

I would simply like to know if anyone has an actual source, specifically a document, which supports this COLLINS/DEVILLIER marriage. I believe there was a French military officer by that name in the Colonies during the Revolutionary era. Does anyone know anything about him or his family?

I have been researching this family for several decades now and would be very appreciative of any documentation that would resolve this question once and for all in my mind. (I am descended from Brice’s daughter Catharine. Her son William, also named in the will, is my 2ggfather.)

Thank you to anyone who can help!

Seeking a Source
The source for the Devillier surname is the 23 January 1787
Chassey-Beaupré, Meuse, Lorraine, France marriage of Nicolas Collin to Madeleine Bourotte where the parents of Nicolas Collin are named Brice Collin and Anne De Villier. That Nicolas Colln married in 1787 shows clearly he is too old to be a son of Brice Collins of Pennsylvania and Ohio. Nicolas Collin is not the son of Brice Collins of Pennsylvania and Ohio and neither is his mother Anne De Villier the wife of Brice Collins of Pennsylvania and Ohio.

!From will of Brice COLLINS, signed 12 D
!From will of Brice COLLINS, signed 12 Dec 1817, probated 21 Mar 1818, Belmont County, Ohio. !NOTE: Ancestral File has Brice's wife's name as Ann. ??? It does seem rather odd that none of his children were named Martha, although Catherine names her daughter Martha. Is it possible that Brice married twice?
